Talking Upgrade help :)

Hey guys,

I'm upgrading my system and i could use some help choosing.

Current system Specs:

Intel Core i3 2120
ASUS P8Z68-V LX
WD 1.5TB 5.9K
8GB DDR3 1866
Thermaltake 750W SLI PSU
No GPU (Died)


so here is what i need help with.

Option 1:

Keep my MB
Keep my Memory
Keep my HD
Core i7 3770K
Corsair H80
HD 7970 or GTX 680

Option 2:

Intel core i7 3820
ASUS Rampage IV GENE
Corsair H80
HD 7850 (would crossfire them soon)
My HD
My memory (would add 8 more GB soon)

Also i will be runing VMware with windows server 2008 and windows 7 sometime in the future to upgrade to MCITP enterprise Admin.

You wouldn't see any performance difference between the 3770K and the 3820 (both quad-core with HT).

Definitely option 1 over 2. I would go for 1, but drop from a 680 down to a 670 and then grab an SSD.

I agree with Bond007. According to Tom's Hardware, the 680 is a Rank 2 video card, while the 7970 (and the 670) are rank 3. If you get a 670, you'd still get a top-notch graphics card, while having money for a SSD. The key is that having an SSD as your boost drive should make much of your computing go faster, especially starting Window, opening applications, and loading games. Have your boot stuff only on your SSD, and have all your data files and caches on your regular HDD. As the Drunken (Drugged?) Master would say... "WINNING!!!"
