Default Phenom II X4 955 okay for gaming? + Build Details

Hey, I'm looking at capping myself at $1000(tax+shipping included) for this build (haven't had a desktop PC in 3 years, been using an XPS 15, I'm PUMPED!). I know I SHOULD buy an i5 2500k but am I going to notice a difference in any games if I just go with the Phenom II X4 965 instead? NCIX has a bundle deal with that CPU and an ASUS M5A97 board for $170 + 8GB Mushkin RAM ($40). Originally my plan was to get the 2500K ($210) and the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 board + 8GB Patriot Gamer 2 DDR3-1600 RAM combo ($130) for a total of $340. So go AMD and save $130 or stick with Intel? Should I be concerned the CPU isn't the "black edition"?

MONITOR - $146 - DELL ST2320L 23" 1080P LED BACKLIT LCD *ALREADY BOUGHT*
CASE - $50 ($40 NET) ZALMAN Z9 PLUS *ALREADY BOUGHT*
PSU - $75 ($50 NET) OCZ FATAL1TY 750 WATT MODULAR *ALREADY BOUGHT*
MOTHERBOARD - GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (OR THE ASUS BOARD I MENTIONED ABOVE)
RAM - PATRIOT GAMER 2 DIVISION 2 SERIES PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 (OR THE MUSHKIN RAM I MENTIONED ABOVE)
CPU - CORE i5 2500K or Phenom II X4 965
GPU - UNDECIDED, hoping I can get a GTX560 Ti 448 1280MB or Radeon 7850 2GB for around $230 ($200 if I can catch a surprise special, the Gigabyte 560Ti 448 was on for $200 last week)
SSD - $130 ($90 NET) OCZ Agility 3 *ALREADY PURCHASED*
HDD - WESTERN DIGITAL 750GB 2.5MM 7200RPM (OUT OF XPS L502X NOTEBOOK, ALREADY OWN)
OPT - $20 - ASUS DVD WRITER *ALREADY PURCHASED*
OS - $93 - WINDOWS 7 64BIT OEM *ALREADY PURCHASED*
SOUND - $45 - TURTLE BEACH X12 HEADSET *ALREADY PURCHASED*

Approx total after tax with Intel build ~ $1107
Approx total after tax with AMD build ~ $970

Thanks!

ASUS M5A97 secondary PCI-E slot is only 4X...def won't be entertaining that board now.

I would say go for the 2500k it has great OC potential and beats the crap out of anything AMD has in the desktop performance CPU sector.

The AMD is fine for gaming.. BUT for the bit extra the 2500K will last allot longer

THe X4 955 or 965 is a good CPU, but you are talking about a CPU that came out in 2009. As Dzzope said, the 2500k should last longer.

i5 2500k + EVGA GTX 480 ($225)

imo .. best bang for buck, hands down.

I used a 955 for a long time and it was great the only reason why I upgraded was because of my addiction to build hehe
