Default ITX multimedia build (500 or less)

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on building a machine for my friend.

- Will be used for day to day general pc use
- Biggest requirement he has is for it to be able to play 1080p video
- Also would like for it to be able to be used with dual monitors
- He would prefer it to fit in a small form factor case
- He has an external drive at the moment we could use if HD prices are still too crazy
- Budget is around $500. I will supply him with OS and he doesn't require kb/mouse/monitors

I see silverstone has some cases that come with a PSU and things like that but i'm not really sure about what motherboard/cpu/gpu combo would be best for something like this.

Also feel free to recommend something other than ITX, just generally looking for a small form factor pc.

Thanks!

Given your needs for the PC it sounds like one of the few scenarios when AMD will be the way to go. I would build a Llano based PC centered around one of the 65w processors (Llano jumps from 65w to 100w...personally I wouldn't go the latter in small form factor, but I am sure it can be done no problem). It will support multi monitor and have enough processing power for all your everyday needs (would even be able to do light duty gaming).

Quick look on newegg and this would be my cpu of choice for you

Newegg.ca - AMD A6-3500 Llano 2.1GHz (2.4GHz Max Turbo) Socket FM1 65W Triple-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6530D AD3500OJGXBOX

I think you could use similar hardware that I did: Mini-ITX Domain Controller
  • Intel Celeron G530
  • ASUS P8H61-I
  • Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 2X2GB DDR3-1333
  • Antec ISK300-65

I am also building an ITX based HTPC/General Use PC and have settled on the same components in the quoted text except for the case. This is the case I will be using.

The Antec ISK300 is nice since it gives you the option for a slim optical drive and the ability to use the PCIE x16 slot with a low-profile card. Plus the PSU is built into it, so it's a bit cheaper than the MBOX + PicoPSU, but obviously it is a fair bit larger.

Domain controller is fine but I don't think that Celeron will do 1080p. I know Arinoth was complaining that the Pentiums in 1155 style don't do 1080P so I guess Celerons are even worse. Best chance would be the Llano. As for case InWin BP655 has some pretty good reviews on newegg and comes with PSU too. You could use the A8 Llano but with good cooling, I don't know with what cooler they ship but if you get an original cooler from an older Phenom II, those that have the base from solid copper and 2 pipes that would be perfect even for an A8. If you install Win7 you will not need an optical unit unless you want to make it a blu-ray player.

I really like that case, currently using it as my HTPC case. Only drawback is it doesn't seem to have amazing air flow, has decent but not amazing. I haven't gotten around to mounting a silent 80mm case fan in there to help promote air flow either (need to find some right sized nuts).
