My System Specs

Default Which Motherboard to Pick ( 1155 )

Ok, so the second rig is probably sold tomorrow

bye bye i5 2500 @ 4.2Ghz

so now i want to upgrade my main rig and maybe sell the i7 960 also later on once the new 1155 is in

So between CPU's i've got 2 choices

Intel Core i5 2500K @ 239.99 on Special
Intel Core i7 2600K @ 319.99 on Special

Which of both is best for Gaming ? and better overclocker ?

For motherboards i've got lots of choices

ASRock Z68 Extreme4 @ 189.99
ASRock Fatality P67 @ 229.99
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z @ 184.99
Asus P8Z68-V @ 184.99
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z / Gene 3 @ 199.99
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe / Gene3 PCie 3.0 @ 274.99
Asus Maximus IV Extreme Z @ 349.99
eVGA Z68 SLi @ 224.99
Gigabyte Ga-Z68X-UD3H-B3 @ 174.99
Gigabyte Ga-P67A-UD7-B3 @ 279.99

Alright... so what i want...

If i find a second 5970 i will want to Crossfire, so i'll need the most performance... x16 on each but none of these board have the support of it.. and if i do change to SLi i want to be able too

i want a very good overclockable motherboard to obtain the max out of either the i5 2500K or i7 2600K

it will be watercooled so heat will not be an issue

Thanks

EDIT : also for my current setup if i dont upgrade.. would i benefits of 2x 6950's in Crossfire to my single 5970 ?

For gaming, the 2500k is an obvious choice. You won't benefit much more from getting the 2600k if you're just gonna be gaming. If you do any video editing or anything like that, pick up the 2600k. They're both great for overclocking as you probably already know, so it really depends on the chip you get.

6950's in CF is pretty close to a 5970. A 5970 is basically 2 5870's in CF. The performance of a 6950 and a 5870 is pretty similar.

If I were you, I'd wait it out until the 7950's are released before doing anything. That release might drop the prices of other cards, and Kepler should be just around the corner too. A 7970 or 7950's in CF sounds good.

Yup for gaming 2600/2700 are not worth it IMO you dont benefit from the HT cores, now if you fold then 2600/2700 are the way to go.

I agree with what the others have already mentioned about the 2500k.

I would also add, if you're not in a huge rush... around April the new 3570k will be available, and should be a drop in upgrade on the current p67/z68 boards.

Personally I'm a bit biased towards the ASUS boards, but we pay a higher price for the quality & features of these boards.

Also wait a bit on the video card, the newer stuff is almost here, OR get a good deal from people upgrading...
I see you have lots of new toys going into your home before the new bun(dle of joy) in the oven is finished baking hmm?

So my decision has been made...

Intel Core i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z / Gene 3

will be purshased but im also thinking of a 90GB 550Read / 500Write SSD which are selling at around 110-120$ ATM

Very nice choices!

I just noticed NCIX has a deal on the 2500k $209.99
Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB - Intel - BX80623I52500K

Your awesome motherboard for $179.99 @ Newegg.ca
Newegg.ca - ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

If you can get someone like memoryexpress to price beat them... save another few $$$ to put towards the SSD!

50$ off compared to local shop is nice, but shipping from both location is just gonna make the stuff be at the same price... might as well get it local and have is in my hands asap haha
