My System Specs

Default My new AWESOME computer

Just finished building up a computer from old parts I had laying around.

M2A-VM AM2+ MOBO with x1200 integrated graphics
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ @ 1.9GHZ
Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2
1TB Caviar Green HDD
Thermaltake V4 case
Win7 64bit

Okay, okay, so it's all pretty old and slow. But I had all the parts just laying around. All I was waiting for was an AM2 CPU (insanely hard to find these days). Luckily a friend of mine came across one he didn't need anymore. So voila, my new computer.

I figure I'll install XBMC on it and run it as a media box to my TV. I'll probably also use it to back-up my primary machine's boot drive. And I'll also install V7 on it and do a little extra supplemental folding on the side with it, fwiw.

In the future, I may install SUSE on it and play around with linux a bit.

Any other ideas what I could do with it?

I am not sure how well that integrated is (never used it before) for HD video. If it is lacking you could keep your eyes open for a cheap used hd 5450 to get quality HD video out of it for its media box purpose. I am sure a used one wouldn't cost much at all as they go on sale pretty cheap as it is.

Also, for you info if you didn't already know, that motherboard is just a bios update away from accepting what looks like any 95w or less athlon II or phenom II if you ever feel the need for an upgrade and come across a cheap one. Don't take my word on it being any 95w or less, but the CPU support list on the ASUS site has the official support list (link below).

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS M2A-VM

Otherwise I am glad you got some use out of old parts. My brother was running my old athlon 1700+ for various random tasks (his second computer) up until last year when he upgraded his main rig (his previous computer kicked my 1700+ to the curb). Honestly if its only doing media, web browsing and other basic tasks it will last for some time.

Edit: just out of curiosity sake I took a quick look at the support list and if you ever felt the need it appears the fastest CPU it will accept is the 95w version of the Phenom II X4 945...just a FYI. Wasn't AMD's upgrade path great for many AM2/AM2+/AM3 motherboards.

Hmm, ya, I looked at all those options a couple of months ago when I was looking for a CPU. This is the kind of project where I'm not going to put ANY money into it. If I happen across a part, then okay, fine.
Also, I have an ASUS X1950Pro somewhere. As soon as it is found, it's going in.

Other than that, I didn't really need any spare machine. My main rig doesn't sit too far from my TV, so it wouldn't be a stretch to hook IT up. I guess I just built up the machine because I wanted to play...

Enjoy the playing then.
