Rig for SWOTR & Folding

I decided to scrap the idea of the m-ITX rig and go with either an m-ATX or an ATX motherboard in this build.

I will be using this rig for playing SWTOR and folding.

I will overclock it in the future. I have to, it's in me. I can't leave anything stock for too long.

My budget is $500.00 - $700.00

Parts that I have are:

• HDD: Seagate 1 TB hard drive
• GPU: Asus Radeon HD6850 1GB

Monitor will be my 42" LG Plasma TV that is 720P

These are the parts I have picked out so far.

• RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 - $44.00
• PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX600 V2 600W - $70.00
• CPU HSF: Corsair Hydro Series H60 - $70.00
• Case: BitFenix Shinobi Black Mid-Tower - $70.00 (which I plan on modding)
• ODD: Samsung 22X DVD-RW - $17.00
• Extras: Assortment of BitFenix Alchemy Sleeved cable Extension (Red) - $90

Total: $361.00

Now it just leaves the CPU and the motherboard. The only requirements for the motherboard are:

1. Overclocking capabilities
2. colour scheme; either black & red, all black, black & white or black & grey

I am stuck between AMD or Intel and then the choice of CPU and motherboard.

at mid level you can go either Phenom II X6, the 1090T is the sweet spot in AMD camp or the i5 2500k. If you want more, especially for folding, you need to go i7 2600k. For mobo I would go with the Foxcon rattler, black and red scheme, good VRM cooling too. issue is these 2 alone are around 450-475$ Kinda jumps over your budget. Is for you to decide what you really need, want or can afford.

Honestly at this point intel is going to kick AMD's ass no matter what CPU you buy. To stay in budget I recommend i5 2500k $215.69 and a Asus p8z68-V LX $112. Honestly the mobo is not great but it is the only way to stay on budget and I truly believe Intel is the way to go.


You can get the PSU at NCIX for $56 - Corsair Builder Series CMPSU-600CX 600W ATX Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan *2 Year Wrty* - Corsair - CMPSU-600CX

You can get the H60 for $60 at NCIX - Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H60 High Performance CPU Cooler System LGA1155 LGA1366 LGA1156 AM2 AM3 - Corsair - CWCH60

And the RAM for $39.99 - Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit - Corsair - CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9

This will save you some money and you can get a Gigabyte UD3H from NCIX for $155 bringing your total to 707.69. Slightly over budget but definitely worth it.

+1 go with intel / 2500k. The noctua d-14 is on sale for $49.99 at ncix. I'd go with that instead of the h60 h70 . Same performance but last longer, quieter.

Just for SWTOR 2500k is way overkill (for most/all games as well) but no idea on the folding, I would not waste my electric bill on it on a budget :P

I would suggest for a cheap good CPU cooler the Hyper 212 from cooler master. It's a very good cooler for the price.

NHD-14 wont work with that ram he would have to go low profile same with a 212+ hence probably why he picked the h60.

I have to agree with others. With your CPU/MOB budget (and want to OC) I have to recommend a 2500k, and then your choice of MOB to suit your liking with the rest of the budget.

HD 6850 a little overkill for that resolution and game, no? Unless you're doing a folding project that can use ATI cards, of course.
