Default New "member", need build advice

Howdy folks. I'm here to see about getting assistance with a new computer build for this waste of time and money you guys call WOW. My son is an avid player of the game and his computer crapped out, so I want to build him a new one for Christmas. Usually I pick stuff up from newegg.com. He'll also be using this computer for schoolwork and perhaps some apps writing. I've not looked into hard drives yet. I'd prefer this to be one that will be able to play the game without needing upgrades for a few years. I wouldn't mind a sound card recommendation either. Sound isn't something I usually use on a computer. Thanks in advance.

As an owner of a fx-6100 cpu, I would reccommend against getting the fx-8120 chip. The new bulldozer chips from AMD lack single threaded performance which is what is needed for games. You are much better to go with a core i5 2500k or if you want to go with amd gear, then an older chip such as 1090t will serve your son's needs better. Maybe get a gtx 560ti instead of the 550ti for a significant boost in video performance (a bit more expensive though but it would be more future proof). As for the power supply you can get away with a lower wattage unit if you are only running one video card. Something like a 560-600W gold rated would be fine. Maybe something from seasonic or corsair. Said RAm and case look good though.

I'd second the suggestion to look at PH II chips rather than BD. Bulldozer at current time is just not worth the money they're asking, and in many cases is matched by Phenom II hexa-core (true cores, not the quazi 2/3 cores that make up modules in BD) procs.

Thanks folks. I'll poke around in a bit and post something else up later tonight or tomorrow. Lucky my son's in his 20s, so his present won't actually have to be under the tree! Just a card saying the system's on its way will be plenty for him if I can't get it put together sooner.

neojjjk suggested you an Intel H61 chipset. That mobo cannot overclock the CPU if you decide to go with the i5 2500k which is the CPU of the moment. You will need P67 or Z68. If you decide to go with any of them (I would go P67) make sure the mobo you pick has good heatsink cooling on VRMs. If you want to go the AMD route, you could go AM3+ if you think changing later for the succesor of Zambezi, if it will still stay on socket AM3+, but for the moment go with Ph II X6 1090T, seems best value and better OC potential than the 1100T.

Hey, change of pace. How does this laptop look? It's looking like the cost would be about the same as building one, and the portability would really be better for him. He's already got a monitor/keyboard/mouse he used on his last laptop so screen size isn't going to be an issue with the laptop. Course, if this one will work all the better due to price.

You'll get better gaming performance out of the Asus, too.

Thanks everyone. Based on the entire thread, now looking at this desktop and the laptop recommended. If this desktop will work I'll go with it, otherwise I guess I'll grit my teeth and go with the laptop.

EDIT - Wow, while looking for reviews on the Acer, found this dedicated box on TigerDirect.
