Default Sub $550 Gaming build - Christmas gift

So attempting to put together a sub $550 gaming build for buddy at work. He's co-buying with dad for Christmas for his brother so cost is of a premium here. Anyways this is what I have so far:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Mostly gaming
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$550
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Canada
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
No pref
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
DVD drive
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Searched but not really seen this cheap
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default
8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
ASAP
9. What resolution do you use?
1280x1024 - but I hear he could use a new one

Currently @ $516 before tax with price matches

I think you've done really well here so far. Right off the bat I was gonna say you're gonna be doing AMD if you want gaming for that price. My only concern is the motherboard which I am currently looking up. It might not support 125w cpus. Some of the mATX boards don't.

EDIT: Looks like your good there. Dunno anything about MSI boards (not my 1st choice) but a really great price for a mobo!

I couldn't find the 125W version of that CPU anywhere on the MSI's CPU support list.

However, this supports the 955 BE 125W:

Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2P mATX AM3 GF7025 NF630A DDR3 1PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 RAID Video Sound Motherboard

Might have to do a bit of research to verify what HDD is used, but you never know what you might find inside a box for the same price as you're paying for that 500G Hdd.... :)

Iomega Prestige 1TB External Desktop Hard Drive (34275) - Silver : External Desktop Hard Drives - Future Shop

edit: (This one's listed as a 7200 rpm drive...) LaCie 1TB 3.5" External Hard Drive (301304U) : Desktop External Hard Drives - Best Buy Canada $72 for a 1T? That wasn't a bad price before the floods in Thailand.......

edit#2: Hrmmm... looks like it's sold out, you get the idea though. ;)

There are 3 revisions of that board so make sure it's the v3.0.

the only thing that raises question marks in there is the PSU, does not say anywhere if is a 80plus or 80plus Bronze so we suppose is not. I would look into getting one. A Corsair Builder would do the job even the 430W version.

Save a few bucks and swap the AMD quadcore for a 1155 pentium G620, more power then most AMD quads believe it or not.

My 1156 i3 rig overclocked plays everything out there without a hitch on a gtx 460 (albeit on a 24" 1080p) panel. Skyrim and FA NV seem to the only games I have a bit o lag. My rig was uber cheap too. Im quite surprised at what this cheapie setup cant do.
