2011 will run your cards at x16, x16 and you would be able to add a third (3x SLI is full of headaches though I hear) your current set-up will run then at xx8,x8 which is only ~2% dip in performance. Really it's not much LGA 2011 is for benchmarking and 1155 is good enough for everyday needs and gaming.

If you want to have the best get 2011 if you want to play the best games and have money left in your pocket 1155 is for you.

Buy eVGA [03G-P3-1584-AR] EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Fermi 772MHZ 3GB GDDR5 2xDVI Mini-HDMI PCI-E Video Card

What would be the difference in how the LGA2011 runs my gpus? I also got the mobo for the option of adding a 3rd card down the road.
Just making sure we both understand here....do you really already have a mobo? If yes, you know that it is either one socket or the other - if it's in your hands, it's 1155...the cpu's socket 2011 requires a different motherboard altogether, they are just now coming to market.

Which motherboard are you referring to?

Anything with 3@ 3GB GTX580's is going to be blazingly fast. If you're just building now and have essentially unlimited budget, go ahead and go 2011. Otherwise, 1155 with a 2600K will still be fantastic.

The Mobo is on order right now, and its the AS Rock Extreme7 Gen3. The CPU is unopened, and I used a lot of store credit from futureshop to buy it last week. (cost savings).

Based on your guys' feedback, I think I will stick with the 2600k and the soon to be delivered Exteme7 Gen3.

Let me say that I did invest a lot in this new build, and I'll upload pics when all the parts arrive, but I definitely only want to spend as much as merited at this point.. And if running at x8 x8 is only a 2% dip in performance, it will not be worth spending another $200 to swap out the 2600k. (The mobo price should be relatively the same either socket).

It is definitely fortunate I'm in such good company here, because shelling out on these GPUS has been very costly and I think from your guys' responses I will have some peace of mind. The timing of my purchase is what raised my concerns, as in my eyes I was risking having the worst possible timing on ordering the sandy bridge and Z68 mobo.

If everything's confirmed here, I will be happy and confident in my purchase. Dual GTX 580 3GB's and surround 24" gaming.. Can't wait! (Thumbs up to i7 2600K, As Rock Extreme7 Gen3)? :)
