Default Upgrade Time, Thoughts?

Hey guys!!

I am just about to upgrade my current PC. Here is what I currently have.

e8600
P5Qe
4 gig Mushkin DDR2
Zotac GTX-580
OCZ GamerXStream 700W
Wester Digital Black 2TB
Lian Li Armorsuit case

I am thinking that I need new MB,CPU,RAM and maybe an additional HDD. I was hoping to spend around 600-700 CAN. I usuallt buy from NCIX or CanadaComputers as they both have retail locations in or near Toronto. I use the PC mainly for Gaming (RPG - playing Witcher 2, looking forward to new elder scrolls game, Strategy - Civ5) and school (Matlab coding and simulations)

I have a HUGE amount of media (the 2TB drive is full) which I do not want to lose, so I am not sure the best possible way to transfer it, I am thinking that this drive will not just plug into a new MB and retain it's data.

So I was thinking a 2500k, new asus board (I like them), just not sure on the rest, should I get a SSD or just another big platter drive. Can I keep this one with all the data or will it need to be backed up?

Thoughts?

+1 to Dans comments.

HX650 is on sale this week @ NCIX unless you can get that AX750 from the random GTA retailer that was selling them for $95 bucks

If your current hard drive is full you will need to get either another hard drive or a SSD to use as an OS drive. Personally I would go with an ssd of some sort...check out all of Akg's reviews to determine the one that suits you best.

This is awesome. I assumed I was going to lose everything that I had on that drive.

I think that maybe I will grab an SSD for OS and such.

New CPU in sept? It is prolly end of Sept that I will be doing this so maybe that works out well for me!!

One reason I made that suggestion is because I am not sure of what OS you are currently using and what you want to go to. It seemed the easiest way to avoid losing any data if you changed your OS

Not 100% sure, but you should be able to keep using the OS off your current hard drive. Might have to reactivate though.

flip a coin. or use another drive or linux live cd to save your data off teh c drive, wipe that one partition(not the data partition(s)
and then install on it again but a green drive is slow for os,unless you wont open many apps often, then yeah

The drive I have is not a green but it is full so i will be buying anew one regardless. It is good news to know that I can just plug this one in and get the data off of it. That will save me a Tonne of hassle!!

Thanks guys!!
