Sorry, could someone clarify what an H67 board is? Is it a specific model or is it a chipset shared across many models?

Great, thanks!

Alright, so after reviewing the comments, my setup looks like this:

MB: ASRock Z68 Extreme4
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K
VC: 1 MSI Radeon HD 6950 2GB
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB)
HD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Two V3
Monitor: ASUS VH242H Black 23.6"

I'm not terribly worried about boot time, so I'm going to hold off on the SSD for now.
For the difference in price to downgrade the motherboard to an H67 and the CPU to a non-K, I'd rather leave the possibility to efficiently overclock open, in case I want to do it in the future.
I chose a monitor that runs in 1920x1080, seems like a good match in price and user ratings.
Upgraded to the Antec Nine Hundred Two as recommended.
Downgraded the RAM to 8gb and the VC to only one Radeon HD 6950 2gb.

All in all, I've got this priced out to about $1650.

I also want to leave the door open to add a gpu down the line, so an overkill cpu is with me for now.

If you do decide to OC down the line, I don't see a custom cooler there...
though that is something you can add down the line, how easy / hard it will be will depend very much on the case and cooler you pick..

Are you a folder? do you do much which is CPU and core intensive? (folding, encoding etc)
If not then I would suggest knocking another 80 odd $ off the build and go for a 2500k.
Still the option to over-clock but it will show no difference in day to day use of games web etc..

While it is personal preference. 1920x1200 "feels" better for gaming and web than 1080 (though you do get used to it)
list of 1920 1200 res monitors on newegg A friend of mine has 3 of the hanns.g. It is HUGE, but again you get used to it and it is a very nice screen for the price.

cool, but unless you sli two gtx590's i dont see the 2600 make a difference.

plus, with amd gpus, you dont take much of a hit with stock clocks vs the higher end nvidia ones

Great, thanks for the advice on the 2500k! Saves me about $100.

I'll have to look more closely at the monitors.

I'll add that while my friend hasn't has a problem with any of his ones, there does seem to be some with no luck on the hannsg.. though that is true of anything (to varying degrees)
