My System Specs

Default Parts suggestions?

Hey,

I'm going to start a project soon to build a mineral oil [submurged] computer that's sort of an aquarium! All of the components other than the HDD and optical drive will be 100% submurged in mineral oil with a 'water' loop to cool the mineral oil.

I am more than willing to buy used parts, but I would only buy used components if they are lightly used.. I want the hardware to be good for at least 3 years before it dies.

I have some general thoughts so far:

PSU - MODULAR! 80+ gold preferred: Buy the Kingwin LZG-550 LAZER 550w Power Supply at TigerDirect.ca $115
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=60766&vpn=GA-880GMA-USB3&manufacture=Gigabyte - AM3+ capable mATX format $100
NCIX.com - Buy AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 6 Core Processor 3.2GHZ Socket AM3 Retail Box - AMD - HDT90ZFBGRBOX - in Canada - 6 cores is what I want (and I'll o/c if the mobo provides adequate o/c capabilities) $180
ram - I'm a beliver that anything past CAS 7 @ 1333 has no 'real world' advantage... preferably used? +8GB ~$8-10/GB
cooler - NCIX.com - Buy Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink AM2 AM3 LGA1366 LGA1155 LGA1156 120MM - COOLERMASTER - RR-B10-212P-G1 - in Canada $25 price match
gpu - Something for folding with... so probably a gtx 460. $130-180
HDD - NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc SATA 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM 5YR MFR Warranty - Western Digital WD - WD5001AALS - in Canada $50
Optical drive - $25
Case? Something that will look cool and fit: Black Ice XtremeIII Radiator - Danger Den (will be using this radiator, got a sweet price used)

I've decided this will become [mostly] a server rig. I will CPU fold, but I'm not sure if I'll spend the $$ to get a good GPU folding card.

I probably will just avoid server chips to keep things simple.. As of now, I'm leaning towards:

NCIX.com - Buy AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 6 Core Processor 3.2GHZ Socket AM3 Retail Box - AMD - HDT90ZFBGRBOX - in Canada
X6 BE, but should I still look into the i5-2500k? It would be fun to do a AMD build for the first time and the extra cores + AM3+ support are nice additions over the 2500k.

Thoughts?

Newegg.ca - GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-USB3 AM3+ AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - I want mATX to keep the size of the submursion tank as little as possible.

you are right about the ram, really anything beyond cas 9 is probably a waste of money
for the amount of performance you gain

gpu. if you wish to do folding, have to be nvidia, unless they've brought out a new client for ATI cards
and really you can get an older card and it'll still out perform what the cpu can do

the amd should be more than fine
if for a server, then the extra cores can let you do more things

and just a side note : i did this once years ago :)

How is AMD vs Intel folding? I'd much rather have the X6 because I'm also using this a server (and possibly 2 or 3 servers at a time...).

I found one person who said that you can expect 12,000 ppd on an X6, so similar to the old i5. Hyper threading on the i7s makes a difference too. It remains to be seen how good BD will be for folding performance so you take a gamble there, but the plus side is you save money over i5/i7

For a cooler just get a Hyper 212+. They're cheap and good.

That being said, one thing I have to say about this build you're doing is "COOL!"

Take lots of pictures. I'm sure a ton of peeps around here would love to see the final product.

So, AMD isn't that much compared to 2500k with some o/c... Still, I'm thinking that since I'll be running a couple servers (minecraft + others), I'll want the extra cores :P I could be wrong... Also, I'd just like to do an AMD build because I want to (and maybe BD will actually be decent).

I was thinking of the 212+ myself... but I don't need anything that special, just as long as the price is right and it has a good fin array that the solution can flow through.

Saying I just "ignore" any budget for a PSU, what are some suggestions if I want:

1) modular
2) 80+ gold (or plat)
3) something known to be reliable (I will be voiding the warranty...)
4) 500w ish (phenom II X6 + GTX 460)

I see a couple seasonic and kingwing PSUs on newegg that fit the above, but they are around $140...

LEPA G500-MA meets 1,2,4, but does it meet 3? It's $120 but I've never heard of them..
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6077243&SRCCODE=SHOPBOT&cm_mmc_o =2mHCjCmtB5_BfCjCVqHCjCdwwp - one of the best prices I could find
I still want the cheapest that meet the above specs.

that's one person, I get a little bit over 15k with my 1090t at 4.0 ghz, the temps are at 37'C this morning with a koolance 360 and a swiftech dual rad.

Is that with Windows or Linux? Mind giving your FSB/HT/NB frequencies as well? I've been messing with my 1090T for a while but still haven't found a satisfactory OC sweet spot that works for folding. It seems if I crank up the FSB too much I get a loss in folding performance, same goes for the CPU multiplier.

And to the OP, Lepa is currently an Enermax rebrand, their gold units should be very good. Only word of caution would be they have next to no customer support in Canada, but since you plan on soaking the warranty labels in oil I doubt that will be an issue.
