Default Upgrade/New

Hello everyone.

Just looking for some feedback on a potential upgrade vs new build. Used mainly for Gaming and graphic intensive software such as the adobe suites.

Current config:
Thermaltake Shark Full Tower
Coolermaster 750w
EVGA NF68 S775
Intel E6600 dc, 2800 MHz (9 x 311)
2GB OCZ XTC SLI DDR2
EVGA 8800GTS
74GB Raptor
2x250gb Seagates
XP Pro SP3

Worth it to upgrade the proc to a
QX6850 ($260), GPU to say 6850-70/2GB($250+, not sure if it will fit in the Shark?) and a couple more GB ram?($100ish)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello there. Like always this is a question of balance. Aside from gaming, is the software you use scaling good with the number of cores? if yes, it would not be a large gain. Better going for a CPU that has HT technology or more physical cores. But from what I see you try to keep the old platform. Maybe will be better to look for some better cpu cooling and try some more OC. Sorry I did not notice, you have a dual core. If you want to keep the platform I would go to a regular Q series, not QX, add some hefty cooling, maybe not liquid but a cooler with a good copper base and slam some overclocking on it.

Either GPU, MOB/Ram/CPU, or both. I would not dump money into 775 if you already have a 6600.

Yeah as is, if upgraded the gpu would definitely go. I have ran on air in the past over 3 but it was just a tad hot. So maybe a new cooler, oc and new gpu...

It may be cheaper to just pop a Core 2 9505 and a Radeon HD 6870 and call it a day.

I wouldn't even touch a Core i5 2400. If the OP decides to go Sandy Bridge, either get a 2500K or don't bother at all because you can't overclock a 2400.
