Default Upgrade Suggestions

Hey guys!

It has been a few years and I am thinking it is time for an upgrade. This is what I currently have

Intel e8600
Asus p5qe
4 gig Muskin Ram (see sig for exact kit)
2 TB Wester Digital Caviar Black
GTX 280 OC (BFG)
Lian Li armorsuit pc-p60
OCX GamerXStream 700W Power supply

I was hoping to spend around $800 Canadian for an upgrade. Been playing a lot of Civ5 and this setup really slows down late in the game. Will be getting The Witcher 2 when it comes out, but mostly I play games and watch HD movies. I am pretty out of touch with what is going on so I do not even know where to start. I may be so outdated that I need almost everything new.

Thoughts?

-P

Civ 5 will slow down most systems in the late stage of the game unfortunately so even if you uprade, you would be expecting some lag. It's just the how the game was developed that's causing the lag trouble. But sure, upgrading will show some signs of resolution.

I would definitely look at the NCIX offer dangtx linked as it is a good combo deal for sandy bridge mobo and processor. The 2500k will more than adequate for your gaming needs and for overclocking.

I would also suggest taking a look at some SSD drives. Grab a 60-120GB SSD to install OS and frequently used applications on it and use the 2TB you have as backup/storage.

4 gig RAM is enough if you are just going to game but if you want to upgrade, G.Skills RAMs are pretty good (have them in my system).

If you are looking to do a major GPU upgrade, PSU upgrade would be a must.

if you don't need hyperthreading (Ie you're mostly a gamer), the 2500k is a very good choice.
I remember reading somewhere that civ5 depends pretty heavily on CPU and CPU clock speed, so also consider getting a good heatsink and overclocking

Agreed! 4.8Ghz stable 24/7 use? Yes please!

All these people upgrading. *sniff*

As a gamer, I'd certainly go with a 2500K and plan to once the Z68 boards drop.

I do some programming on this machine mostly in MatLab. Should I stick with the GPU I have or will I have budget for a new one? I assume I need new Ram as well?

G.Skill ram for sure. Nearly always "problem free".
