My System Specs

Default Budget CAD build

Hi everyone,

I had plans to do a really high end i7 CAD workstation, but unfortunately my plans have changed with some personal issues. I still need a decent machine for a bit of CAD work, and want some advice. I figure at best I have $400 to $500 to spend, and need MOBO/RAM/CPU. I can reuse my tower, PSU, HDD, and video cards for now, with the intentions of upgrading those in the future.

I'm thinking AMD since they are a little better priced than Intel.

I'm open to advice!

Thanks,
Jim

yup, go with an 880/890 board and the am3 phenom II of your choice.
make sure to get the ones with 6 megs of l3, as the 840 as sky pointed out has none? :)
and whatever corsair gskill etc 4-8 gig kit you can find.

or......if you still have ddr2? get the 785 mobo + phenom II of your choice

edit : you did say 500$? 2500k + whatever board you can find? big big difference, especially when clocked.
just dont use the bad sata ports :)

Adding a 1366 CPU and 6GB of RAM to go along with your Rampage II Extreme is within your stated budget minus your asking price for the board.. I've seen used i7 920 processors sell used for between $150-175 recently.

RAM - 6GB triple channel goes for $70.

Mobo - typical 1366 (ASUS Sabertooth, GB X58 USB3) will run you at $180-200.

CPU - Used i7 920/930 can be found for <$200.

Well I guess finding a used 1366 would be the kicker, I'd only been looking at new stuff so far which was out of my price range. I was also looking to use the proceeds of selling the Rampage II extreme towards the rest of the stuff, making it a bit less actual cash output. But I think I will have a look around at used stuff and see what I can find.

Thanks guys,
Jim

if you can hit up shop bot.ca and them memory express and price check all you are looking for.
if you find a better price they will match plus you get 7 days as well
but for most things i find mem ex is best prices across canada.
if you do find a better deal make sure it doesnt say limited quantities or they wont match.
i went back in within 7 days and got refunded $30 for the other halves raven rv01 case.

ive been stepping up one peice at a time though myself with a smaller budget
x4 640 $100
used radeon 4890 $100
crosshair IV formula $219 on sale
8 G xms 3 $90

Go used. Get a AMD setup, and if your really want the processing muscle get one the six core CPU's. They go for under $200 new, and cheaper obviously used
