I guess that's intel... always trying to charge you more $ than their products are actually worth... damn lack of real competition. I almost edited my post to not do a double... I've been a regular on too many forums where nobody cares when you double post, so it's more habit than anything [to not edit].

I wouldn't completely say that i7 lga 1366 has completely tanked in value since it still offers a few premium features such as connectivity with 36x PCIe lanes. It's just tanked in terms of price vs CPU clock speeds.

I personally haven't seen any value in i3 from the beginning (due to AMD being very competitive in this price range), but I barely adventure into that lower end of the computer market.

^^ Somehow I found it a disappointment that 1155 still only has 16 PCIe lanes, and it hits harder that you can really only significantly OC K-series chips. I would still go with them, though.

yes.

well maybe not. check some sandy bridge high rez sli/xfire benches, it kicks arse. now maybe when we go into quad cards, yeah ok, but who is running that? or rather, how many people out the consumer bunch will fit that category? 0.004%? :)

amd still has better value on the low end, with true quad core cpus doing a better jobbe in multithreaded applications, but ib singe/dual threaded which still means a good chunck of the software used? that performance per clock of the said i3 chippies is there. plus the power figures, and the rest.

having said that, im sure dude's gf will be more than happy with either solution.

This is slightly over budget coming in at 320$ with PMs
NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core i5 760 Quad Core Processor Lynnfield LGA1156 2.8GHZ 8MB Cache Retail Box - BX80605I5760 In Canada. 200$
NCIX.com - Buy G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-4GBXL 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Memory - F3-12800CL9D-4GBXL In Canada. 45$
NCIX.com - Buy ASUS P7H55-M/CSM mATX H55 LGA1156 DDR3 PCI-16 2PCI-E1 1PCI SATA2 HDMI VGA Sound GBLAN Motherboard - P7H55-M/CSM In Canada. 81$

Rather a quad as more and more games are slowly utilizing it and this pc i'm hoping will keep her happy for several years as its not something she likes spending money on typically. A dual core with HT can't compete clock per clock compared to a true quad either.
