Default Cheap build for gaming/movies/tv

Hi all looking to build a new computer for gaming/movies, its been about 6 years since i've built my own computer and i'm out of the loop on the new systems. Been looking at ncix and newegg but don't know whats good or bad anymore.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

-Running it through our 42" 720p plasma tv. 42" 720p Plasma TV Series 4 | Samsung PN42C430 - Plasma TVs
-Playing games - anything from games for my kid to Just cause 2, left for dead 2, etc. (got spoiled playing them on my brothers laptop)
-Watching movies and shows off the computer onto our tv

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$550 or less

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Canada

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

-nVidia left a sour taste in my mouth after problems with the integrated video card on my R61
-Seagates have treated me fine in the past, but open to options

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

-All new parts

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

-Read through different threads, got a few ideas - amd cpu's look good

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

-Might do a little overclocking, nothing extreme.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?

-Soon - month or less

9. What resolution do you use?

-1365 x 768

howdy and welcome aboard. you could go the way of a 530/540 i3 on a nice giga h55 or perhaps p55 if you need more pci-e slots. or in the amd form, maybe a nice phenom II on an 880g mobo, still from giga? ud3h,nice little bugger

2x4 oe 2x2 gigs of ram since its pretty cheap

for os drive, try a sammy f3 or wd black/blue

for storage perhaps a 1-2tb green

case, look at the ps04b,cm912

psu wise, antec earthwatts 430 watts and over, depending of gpu used, but for your budget i dont think a 500 watter will be topped.

gpu wise, well try to go for a 6850.

At that resolution, would you be able to get away with using onboard graphics, especially if you're going for an i3 530/540? On a sale, you might be able to get CPU/Mobo for ~$170, but even still the budget is gonna be tight. What Dangtx listed is pretty good, but I'm not sure if a 6850 will fit in the budget.

At what you're willing to spend, I'd be checking the local Craigslist or similar classifieds in your area for a used graphics card if possible. Something like an ATI Radeon 4870 should not run you more than 80-100 bucks and will provide a lot of horsepower for that resolution for quite some time.

Don't get that video card. Personally, I'd get the XFX 5770 that's going for around 120 at NCIX right now, but this is really great deal. Get this one.

NCIX.com - Buy Powercolor Radeon HD 5750 PCs 700MHZ 512MB 4.6GHZ GDDR5 DVI HDMI VGA DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - AX5750 512MD5-H In Canada.
It's a lot better than the 5550, and what do you know? It's cheaper right now!

I would get the X2 250 and just clock it up. I had an X2 250 for my friend's build, and man, it was an overclocking monster. You can clock it miles over the 260 which is @ 3.2.

personally(amateur) i would skimp out on the case and get a 550-555 to unlock along with the 5750 above or a 5770. Or even not skimp out on the case because that 5750 is cheap and the 555 is not that much of a price gap from the althon

I also know that every time ive brought up a coolermaster PSU on here i get thee hammer but for all i know thats a good model. Mem express had CX430's for 4.99(20 off,20 mail in) but they sold out, should have brought that to your attention yesterday. They got 555's for 80 and a 5770 for 100 after savings and rebate, alot of good deals over there i bet your money would go quite far there right now.
