Question Upgrading a few parts in my rig, would appreciate help please.

Hello folks, first time posting here.

So I think my rig is getting a bit long in the tooth and it's Christmas so I can ask for at least one upgrade .

Here are the parts in my current rig (for compatibility reference):
- CPU: E8400 @ 3ghz
- Mobo: nForce 780i (link)
- GPU: 8800GTX (link)
- Ram: 4GB DDR2 1066 (link)

Ok, so I am thinking about upgrading the GPU to a GTX 460. Good choice?

I also need to upgrade my ram, anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at this, but I really have no idea about whether or not it is compatible with my mobo, or if it's even worth the money to upgrade to that specific kit.

*EDIT* I just found out that my mobo does not support DDR3 ram. Lamesauce .

I want to overclock my CPU as well...I currently have a copper Zalman heatsink w/ fan on it, not sure of exact model name; but it's quite large heh. I have never overclocked a CPU before, so if you have any advice or info on that I am all ears.

Here's a pic of the heatsink just in case (note that there is a fan in between those copper blades)

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

p.s. If I upgrade the GPU, ram, and overclock the CPU, how much longer do you think this rig will last me?

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
-Gaming
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
-Bang for the buck. Maybe $80 tops as far as ram goes. $180 for GPU.
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
-USA
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
-No preference, although since I had an nVidia card before I don't mind going with them again.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
-OC, yes. Need help with it though.
8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
-Asap.
9. What resolution do you use?
-1920x1080

If I were you, I would wait for a 500 series Video card. They out shine the 400 series in every way.

But I only have a limited budget (around $180) and those cards would be out of my price range anyways...right?

If you don't mind MIR, the EVGA GTX460 you linked is certainly a very good choice. If not, your other option would be a 6850. Save your money on the RAM. You should be able to hold out on replacing your computer for 2 years or more.

watch out for a super special on a 6850 unless you need cuda :)

your setup is ok. for the time being. oc wise, give it a go fsb wise, drop your ram speed.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Think I will be able to overclock safely with this CPU cooler?

I would not go with a GTX 460. A GTS 450 would be much better for your system, considering your CPU is only a dual-core. If you can wait, AMD will be releasing some lower-end GPU's early in 2011, so keep an eye out for those.

???
I have a Radeon 4870 which is about the same or slightly worse than a GTS 450 in performance with an even weaker gaming CPU (the Phenom 9950 at 2.7 GHz which is easily beaten by Intel C2D in single threaded gaming clock for clock).
At 1650x1080 I am GPU bottlenecked in Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat DX10, so the OP will be even more limited at 1920x1080, using a GTS 450.
