Question GPU sale! (Merry Christmas to me)

While I'm sure that whatever me girlfriend gets me for xmas will be just lovely, I sincerely doubt that a new gobo will be on her list of options. So that leaves it up to me to get myself what I really want!
With the release of new offerings from both the red and green corners, prices have taken a fall, and there are many options to choose from

Which brings me to my question. I will be upgrading my old rig over the next few months, and have decided to start by taking advantage of the good deals on gpus right now. I quite like the look of the MSI twin frozr II lineup, so I'll give you a short list with prices (here in Japan), which I'd love to hear your opinions on:

N470GTX Twin Frozr II [PCIExp 1280MB] ¥23,950 CAD $287.32
R6870 Twin Frozr II [PCIExp 1GB] ¥24,950 CAD $299.32
R5870 Lightning Plus [PCIExp 1GB] ¥25,093 CAD $301.03 (this is the lightning II)
or just for kicks, should I get this...
N480GTX Twin Frozr II [PCIExp 1.5GB] ¥28,440 CAD $341.18

In reality, I probably wouldn't need to go up to the 480, but it seems like a sweet deal...

Oh, and as a final note, I'll be primarily gaming on a 37inch Regza 1080p LCDTV.

Is that your current computer in your SIG?

If your just upgrading your videocard... Your other parts will probably bottleneck all those videocards...

Oh... what about the newer series, are they not available there? ATI 6900 and GTX500...

How much is a GTX 570 in your part of the Globe? I'd recomend that over the 470/ 480...even if its up to $150 more...

First off: your username is super clever/witty!

Neglecting price, I'd say 480 > 5870 >/= GTX 470 > 6870. Anyone agree/disagree?

If these are your only options in 日本 for price, at under $300 it's a tough call between the GTX 470 and 6870. The 6870 is equal or better than the 5870 in some titles due to tessellation improvement, though its overall performance is a small dip from the 5870. It also supposedly scales better in crossfire if you decide on future upgrade. What's your budget anyways, and will heat/noise be a concern?

Thanks for the info! And thanks for the compliment Stock! :)
Well in answer to your questions, the 570 is out of my price range at around CAD$480ish. My rig has old written all over it, I know, but after the GPU I plan to follow up with a new mobo, CPU and DDR3 ram.
And here in 日本 I could get a 6970 for around CAD$360 but from brands I know little about, i.e. Powercolor, Sapphire and 玄人志向 (a Japanese importing/rebranding parts importer)

If you can get the 6970 for $20 more than the GTX 480...do it! It's kind of weird how much more expensive the GTX 570 is over there. Of the brands you named, I see more positive comments about Sapphire, but to each his/her own.

DOH!!! I accidentally put 6950 instead of 6970 in the seach parameters, hence the overly cheap price!! so the 6970 and 570 are both out of reach, which leaves the 6950 in range but is it worth the extra ¥¥¥ over the others above?

I don't think the price premium is worth it. I'd buy either the 6870 or 5870, and base the decision on what games you'll be playing (check out some reviews ). The 6870 is a new card so the drivers can still improve!

To give you some perspective, a 6850 card can be found overseas for $185, the 6870 for $250, 6950 for $300, 5870 for $300, GTX 470 for $250, and GTX 570 for $350.

How much are 1GB GTX 460's? It's a better match for your system and climate than a 470 or 480 in my opinion.
