New customer build

Will be used for gaming, heavy Photoshop use and renders via cad software (Catia V5).
No need for a sound card.
Will be using on-hand LCDs (dual U2711s)
Needs storage space, with redundancy and access speed.
May oc (last time was on a P4, I was told).
Sticking to Air, unless I see a very valid reason to go with a H70 (how silent is it?).
The CPU / Noctua HSF is a bundle this week at NCIX.
Silent rig is a must.

For the motherboard, I need one with dual X16 slots and dual X4 slots - all occupied. Only one that seems to fit the bill is the ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution. Or I may just drop the Revodrive and use a SSD instead.

Budget 3-4k$, delivered. The list below makes it well within budget, even with my assembly / delivery / support cost added. Any ideas, components to change, suggestions?

PM some Gelid Silents instead of those Yates, no fan controller and whoever it is that's getting the rig likely won't be complaining about noise. Cost stays pretty much the same too. I like Yates, but they're honestly just a good reference fan.

You could probably also get an AX850 instead of the HX1000, you'll have enough power, unless they want to do 3/4way SLI. Not to mention it'll be quieter and cheaper.

EDIT: sugar, I think you missed the part about silence, that Lian Li comes with noise dampening material.

So does the Lian Li PC-B25S that I linked. But if silence is the top priority, you usually sacrifice air flow. I think the B25S makes a good compromise, especially since we're talking about a SLI system, with lots of heat to move.

However, I just realized the x4 Classified won't fit. The x3 Classified would though, as long as your x4 cards are single slot. Or the Giga-byte X58A-UD5.

Customer saw my Lili, and loves the monolith style. We browsed the Lili website, and I think his finger went through my screen when we saw the A71 (which is the same as my A70, with a door)... This will be a workstation / gamer combo. Silence is indeed top priority, except when gaming. All Hell can break loose then...

Dan, oddly enough NCIX does not carry the F1s /F3s anymore. Otherwise they would have been my choice (that's what I run with my Raid 50 setup).

Ilya, I'll take your word and try the Gelids. The YLs were always my case fans of choice, I'll see how the Gelids are with this build. And they'll fit better with the poo fans of the Noctua ; ). Same goes for the PSU, the AX850 is in the bag. Wasn't too sure about power consumption, better be safe than sorry - and negative, no tri-SLI in the future.

The motherboard. Jeez Gord, 400$... but I do like the UD5 though. My question is this feasible?

I know the Revodrive and the 9650 won't be a problem in those first 2 slots, but will booting up be an issue with the GPUs in the bottom 2 slots? Oddly enough, I've never tried that.

again, ud9. for that budget, and since he doesn't build another one in 6 months, i say maybe go for it..evga,stay away. unless he likes to tinker with settings :)


edit. bottom vga's should be fine, but ask giga first just in case. i havent touched as many ud5/7's to put my seal of approval on it. and no, its not the same as the pedo bear, its different :p

I can vouch for the CPU bundle, picked it up last week. AKAIK the best price ever in Canada. Heatsink is pretty damn quiet, not a factor when installing two 580's I would imagine.

700$... I'd rather build him a duallie for that price. Couldn't find it at NCIX, since it's not up for sale. Egg is nogo, since I have PP and direct CSR access at NCIX for (sometimes) even better pricing than PP.

When I saw that combo, couldn't believe it at first. Damn fine price. As for noise, the poo fans should do just fine. Normal operation should not kick the 580 fans in high gear - though I still want to keep noise to a minimum.

there was talk of later ud7 revisions beeing ud5? i dont know.

all i can say is,if memory serves right, when the peg slots were populated i could get video on the bottom ones, but i dont remember if they were sli/cf'ed...
