Default Doing a new build and I am kind of out of the loop, please help.

Hey everyone,

Doing up a new build and I am wondering if people had some thoughts on what I should get. I am really stumped on the Mobo/CPU combo I should get, along with ram I suppose. I am pretty much out of the loop where processors are at these days.

What I want is something that is cheaper but a great overclocker, when I orginally got my core2duo I got a e4500 and overclocked it to 3.2. At that point the e8600 wasn't out yet, otherwise I would have bought that.

I hear the i7 950 is one of the best for gaming, but the 930 is cheaper and I can easily overclock it to where the 950 is. I have no idea what i3 and i5 is all about.

Other parts I think I have already decided on is:
Evga GTX460 EE Super Clocked
and an SSD for my main hard drive.

I have used gskill ram and gigabyte mobos in the past, but don't know how they match up with all these other people making stuff for i5/i7 etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

well, what are you going to do with it, and your budget.

looks like you like intel, so the base would b an i3 530/540 mated to a nice lil giga board, ud3/4p will treat you good. 4ghz and spare of dual core hyperthreaded maddness :p

if your budget will not sink with the 930, then go for it. big fan of giga boards,so again try something like an ud3h. some here like the d-e from asus.

Budget is going to be 1000-1500 bucks... hopefully in the cheaper range.

Going to be gaming (lots of sc2, CS:S).. I know I don't need a super computer for either of those games but I want it to be a bit future proof (diablo 3?)

Audio recording/editing and (limited)Video recording/editing.

Thanks for the motherboard suggestion. I have been running a Gigabyte Ep45-DS3L for the longest time and it has served me well.

plenty. future proof? nein!

because of the video work you'll be doing, im thinking your 930 supposition might be right. you may also go with an nv card instead of a nice 6 series amd, sadly. why? well because of cuda.

1366

1156 if you decide on a nice hyperthreaded xeon 3440. will save you some 100 bucks with the board, maybe more depending o nyour choice, if you go that way.if.

cooler wise, cm 212+ as a minimum, or a nice fav on here v6gt, check ak's review.

some dude in the other thread is getting the ncix special, 930+ third party cooler @ 299 or something.
