My System Specs

Default I pulled the trigger

I appreciate all the help and advice given here. After much thought and gut wrenching I purchased the following items. Some choices were made because I just wanted it (like the i7 / 1366 option vs a i5 / 1156 option). Yes I could have saved money considering my likely use for it but I just wanted it. Some items were on sale. My first RAM choice was Muskin but the ones I wanted were not on Gigabyte's motherboard list of tested RAM and I just didn't want to get RAM and not have it work and I figured I could always change or upgrade later. The PSU choice is over sized but I figured it was easier to over size for future upgrades and the price difference between a 500 watt PSU and a 750 PSU wasn't much. I also wanted a modular PSU to help manage the cable mess. My plan is the OS and programs on the SSD and data on the HDD. If I have made any mistakes, I guess it is too late now. I am sure I will be posting a lot of questions once I get the goods.
Thank you HC!

Nice build. I am looking at the same system, minus the case. If you don't mind me asking, what's your total cost and where did you order from?

I ordered from newegg because I am in the US. I also looked at Tigerdirect but they will charge sales tax in my state (so I saved 8% already) I was pleasantly surprised at only $17 for shipping. Some of the stuff was auto added and was free - like the 3D glasses and PowerDVD software and Starcraft game. So total was $2060 (also got a copy of MS office 2010 since I use office and my version is 2003). The 25 inch monitor I thought was a very good deal. I saw it on sale at Staples for $239 and newegg had it for $189 (about $100 off retail). There are also about $40 in mail in rebates with this order. I chose a USB keyboard and mouse because it is a desktop and I don't feel like hunting for batteries when the wireless mouse and keyboard die.

What cases are you looking at? I decided to spend extra on the HAF X 942 because it has the USB 3.0 ports on the front whereas the HAF 932 didn't (but was cheaper as are some of the other cooler master cases). My justification was that when the time comes to upgrade, I will keep using the case.

as with everyone else, good selection of components. Have you considered getting a sound card. It really does make a difference, imho.

I figured that I would add a sound card after I made sure the sucker was working. I am sure that there will be more than a few hurdles in this build and I am not sure how much time it will all take. It might consume hours, days, weeks, (months!). The motherboard does support some sound off the back. What I can plug in the back I don't quite know yet since I haven't gotten my hands and head around it yet.

What are your recommendations for sound cards and speaker sets? Since I got a Blue ray player I am kind of looking forward to playing something on the 25 in monitor 1080p. I am a complete noobie with reguard to surround sound set up and how to do it right.
