My System Specs

Default ~550$ budget for web browsing, movie watchnig at 1080p

Hey HWC,

I'm building a budget PC for movie watching... web browsing on a 24" 1080p 1920x1080 monitor (i think) for a friend. His brand preference is intel, and he wants an intel core i3 or better.

budget is ~550$ AFTER taxes and this is what I've come up with so far. (keep in mind some of the prices are on the weekly sale from NCIX)

NOTE:

- i'm selling my 1tb HDD black for 60 to him, but i got lazy and didn't want to make another column for the parts that i'm selling to him... since it's just one item.

- I know the PSU i suggested is overkill, what suggestions would you guys give me that would be enough for an addition of a graphics card later ? (just in case he thinks the power in the graphics card isn't good enough)

Any suggestions soon would be great! I'm thinking about heading over to NCIX to buy these components tomorrow.

For PSU, get something like this NCIX.com - Buy Seasonic SS-350ET 350W ATX12V 20/24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 80PLUS 120MM Fan OEM - SS-350ET In Canada.

It's more than enough. Sadly the Corsair 400w is discontinued.

oops, didnt know about that. sorry.

now that budget has been given more room to work with(celly) you can get a nice 5 series or perhaps a gt220 or so to help with playback and what not. or go for something beefier and play some games as well. small budgets=my specialty :D yes. im cheap :)

You're sure he want Intel, because he will have more performance for the buck if he goes AMD.

in the low end there is athlon II vs celly. stock speeds athlon wins. oc'ing potential the intel one kicks athlon's arse. hell be pulling arund 150 watts at the wall with a g92 and heavy oc on the 3300, stock cooling.

I guess that depend if OP's friend overclock or not. An Athlon II quadcore + 785G is more performance for the buck than i3 (stock).

IMO can't beat this deal: NCIX.com - Buy NCIX Value Bundle Deal AMD Phenom II X4 920 AM2+ CPU & Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H DDR2 Motherboard - X4 920 & MA785GM-US2H In Canada.

Sway him towards AMD!

And an Antec 380D PSU would be sufficient, however I guess it's not really any cheaper than the OCZ after rebates.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the awesome responses!

I like the celly but I would definitely consider using it if the budget was smaller. with that said the phenom 2 does look very attractive with the 785g, i will consider it.

Any suggestions on the PSU?
