Default Healing a dead computer: new mobo, RAM and CPU

Brief backstory: had a lot of trouble with a pink screen of death. I even posted in the troubleshooting forums for help. Eventually, found it wasn't the video card or the power supply. During the experiment where I found out it wasn't the power supply, I foolishly put a 550W PSU and into my computer with a GTX280 in it (min recommended is something like 600 - 650W) and POW!! Fried my motherboard but good! Tested my power supply and video card in another computer and they work fine... Took out everything and put the other computer's PSU into my computer but no luck... motherboard is fried but good.

So, that means I need a new mobo! Since it's been a couple of years, I figure I might as well get a few upgrades as well. Since I was using DDR2 RAM, I'll need to update that as well. Problem is, I know fairly little about what differentiates motherboards from one another!

I'll be moving my old parts to the new motherboard: EVGA GTX280, 860W PC power and cooling PSU, 2 Western Digital hard drives, and my DVD/Bluray drive.

I'm a pretty huge gamer so that's what I'll be using the computer mostly for, however I am happy with my graphics card so no need to upgrade that. So, what would be the best Motherboard/CPU/RAM combo for me? I have absolutely no preferences in terms of brand except for maybe a slight bias towards Intel (slight).

500$ - 600$ price range in Canadian. Thoughts?

My System Specs

Default

This is what I recommend ideally:

CPU: NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.8GHZ 8MB L3 Cache 130W 45NM Retail Box - BX80601930 In Canada.
Pricematch with: Buy Intel [BX80601930] Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.8GHZ 8MB L3 Cache 130W 45NM Retail Box
$275.79

Motherboard: NCIX.com - Buy ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA1366 DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 PCI Motherboard - SABERTOOTH X58 In Canada.
Pricematch with: Newegg.ca - ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
$199.99

RAM: NCIX.com - Buy Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1600C9 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Core i7 Memory Kit - TR3X6G1600C9 In Canada.
$139.99 ($119.99 after mail-in rebate)

Total cost: $615.77 ($595.77 after mail-in rebate)

If you can spend a few more bucks, consider stepping up to the i7 950 for another $15: Buy Intel [BX80601950] Intel Core i7 950 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 3.06GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S

Or you could grab yourself a decent aftermarket heatsink and overclock the CPU.

Well, if I wanted to go the cheapest route, I'd just buy an old mobo that supports my DDR2 RAM and socket 775 Intel.

There are people saying that the i7's are going to be outdated soon. Should I just buy something cheap like an Asus P5Q pro or something to survive on my old CPU and RAM and wait to upgrade, or do it now?

The i7s will not be outdated soon. The LGA2011 platform which is meant to replace LGA1366 is only expected to be released late next year.

Hmm... alright. Excuse my lack of knowledge, it's been a while since I've paid attention to the hardware scene!
