Hey guys, so this is going to be my first time building.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
University HW, movie watching, gaming
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Canada (Western)
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
ASAP or when it is good to do it
9. What resolution do you use?
around 23 or 24"

I was looking into the AMD X6 and gtx460. What you guys think?

if 650 is your budget and you need to fit a gtx 460 in there, i believe you should go with a dual core, amd of course. i would build around a giga board, perhaps a 785g and for power supply, since you will be using only one card, perhaps an earthwatts 430 or maybe 500 watter? cpu wise, regor 240 or 250 whichevers in stock

So at the local NCIX there is the 1gb on sale for 230 and a i5 for 200.
good deal?

I believe I still have a 500W PSU that is brand new i can use.

For your purposes, an AMD Six-Core would not be optimal as activities like games and general productivity do not benefit from the extra cores. Instead, a Phenom 945/955 would be a better pick if you want to go with AMD.

However, that i5 'Gaming Bundle' would be perfect for your uses! I own two MSI boards, and each one has performed above par. Even their RMA and service has been excellent to me. The board was not the problem, but they still sent me a completely new one without any hassle.

is this worth it? and when is this new platform coming out?

i do say wait it out, but you wont be able to easily accommodate a 24 inch and i5 quad core build in a 650 tax included budget. although you have a psu, rosewill is usually decent, hey zero who is the oem for them?

Intel's mainstream platform will be coming out early next year and their enthusiast platform will be later on in the year. AMD's next platform is supposed to come out next year, but given its delays up to this point, it may take longer.

It's probably not worth waiting.
