Actual 3D apps as in what? But anyway, other types of 3D applications are not comparable to games in terms of performance since they make different use of system resources.

Just a question regarding a new setup.

Is dual channel on a LGA1156 a huge improvement over 4 single channel sticks? (2x4gb Dual vs 4x2gb)

If you use four sticks, they will still be running in dual-channel mode.

Ahhh, ok. Awesome.

Another question, regarding the i7 950 price drops, is getting the i7 950 vs the i7 920 a substantial upgrade? (I will be overclocking to a degree.)
My friend got a 940 recently, sitting under a megahalem but it runs pretty warm so not much chance for an overclock. (About 62c on prime95 load)
I assume maybe the 950 is more similar to the 940, but anyone with any more knowledge is greatly appreciated.

I can't wait for the new NCIX sales to pop up, hopefully there are some good deals T_T

62c primed for an i7 is quite nice, hes got room for more.

since you wont oc much, the different steppings wont probably matter so much.

The advantage of the 950 is the higher multiplier. However, you probably wouldn't be able to hit a much higher overclock with one compared to a D0 920 or 930. As for temperatures, you can go up to 100C without any problems, so a 62C load temperature doesn't prevent you from overclocking.

Thumbs up to what Zero is stating here, for example:
My original Rig was:
E8400 @ 4 Ghz
4 GB Mushkin Redlines @ 1 Ghz
GTX 280
1680 x 1050

When swapped out the Mobo / CPU / RAM to 1366 I7 my Benchmarks went through the roof..period!! The difference was the platform only and the FPS increase was around 40% (I think, it was a long time ago....I did Post the results here).

As for 1366 being EOL in 6 months....who cares really...an I7 930 OC'd to 4 Ghz is gonna smack everything for at least another year......btw, 1366 dying?.....I'm planning on getting my 980X soon....I'm sure that Hexa Core at 4.2 Ghz will eat everything for at least 1.5 yrs :) ......Do I need a 980X ...nope....but I like decent HW (unlike my wife)

You'll find the "experienced" Enthusiasts aren't necessarily the folks that "sit on the fence" waiting for 6 months from now....every 6 months thiers new stuff ou....how long has 1156 been out and its gonna be EOL even sooner then 1366.....my 2 bits ;)

If you can't afford new look for a used deal on BST...seems thiers always 1366 stuff popping up thier, better than going I5 imo....

Ah yeah....I wouldn't go to 100C....most of us I7 OC'ers start looking at holding back when Load Temps are reaching 80-82C....should reach 4 Ghz 4.2 Ghz with a Mega or TRUE....not saying your wrong Zero as your not, but 100C is NOT a good idea ;)

LGA1366 isn't going to be EOL for another year at least. The target for LGA2011 is Q3/Q4 of next year.

I would and have gone up to 100C, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Anyone who has actually read Intel's datasheets (around here, that's probably just me) would know that it's harmless to do so.

^^^ I have read the specs and not into testing the down throttling.....I do read the specs just to get a base-line Max vCore when OC'ing....and no, I certainly won't be cranking up my $1K 980X to 100C....my limit along with most other OC'ers I "chat" with is 80 - 85C.....remember Zero....my Classy NB runs warm, my 480's run warm, so I have limits on my CPU.....

So thier you have it...at least another year on 1366.....certainly not EOL in the near future and worth sitting and waiting

Uh...really......doubt that very much.........lets remember the word "respect"....
