Default 900-1100 budget for a gaming PC
Hi, I have never built a PC before and am looking for advice. My budget is around 600-800 dollars (I want it to be as cheap as possible) my main goal is to have it good enough to play Starcraft 2 smoothly.
The requirements (recommended) for Starcraft 2:
GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM
CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2
RAM: 2 GB

decent sugestion, change the case to a ps04b or cm430
cpu to a 240/250

Intel Core i3 540 - $136
G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Ripjaws - $98
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB - $65
Random Computer Case - $50 (Antec 300, or similar)
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS 500W - $45
EVGA Geforce GTX 460 768MB - $210 (1Gb - $260)
or
XFX Raedon HD 5770 - $160

Total = $499 + video card. That's before pricematch, tax and shipping.
Personally, i'd try to get the 460 768 minimum.. but with budget concerns, may have to go towards the lower end 5770. If you got the cash, go up to the 1GB card instead of the 768MB.

That would be a good system, that would handle SCII quite well. Watch the weekly specials, you can pickup ~500W power supplies for $30-45 easy (I got a ModXtream 700W for $30 after MIR at NCIX) as well as computer case specials / etc.

Does any hard drive work? or does it have to be a special brand?

I like this setup, especially with the 460 768MB if you can swing it, I would however not get the OCZ psu and instead go for a Corsair, Seasonic, Antec or Silverstone offering. A 550W would do well for the 460 but if you want to upgrade later on then I would suggest getting a 650W to leave you with some spare headroom.

I'm looking to do a build for similar purposes. I only need to get some parts since I have a case, power supply and hard drive.

I was thinking

AMD Phenom II X4 945 - $146
Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 - $102.96
G-Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) - $97.99
EVGA GTX-460 Fermi 768Mb - $209.99
Total $556.75

What do you guys think? I would go dual core but I don't want to upgrade for a couple more years. Any other suggestions?

i would go with the MSI HD 5770 (hawk) its like 180 and gets the same performance and better if you overclock it... i got mine at 1015 core and 1385 memory with 1.274 volts
