Default The Ultra Cheap Build Challenge!!!

Hey HWC,

Who's up for the cheap build challange?

This computer will be for a family friend that does websurfing/emails/youtube/music etc... The budget for this computer is $350.

She doesn't mind having to fill out MIR forms or that sort of stuff, also long as it is as cheap as possible.

Here are what i have come up so far...

AMD Athlon II X3 440 Triple Core Processor AM3 3.0GHZ 1.5MB L2 Cache 95W 45NM Retail Box

PM: ~$77

ASUS M4A785TD-M Evo mATX 785G Socket AM3 DDR3 1PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 2PCI Video Sound GBLAN Motherboard

PM: ~$93

Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Core i5 Dual Channel Memory Kit

~$89 after MIR

Azza Helios 910 Black ATX Mid Tower Case 9X5.25 1X3.5 4X3.5INT 230MM Blue LED Fans & Window No PSU

~$44 after MIR

Corsair VX450 450W ATX 12V 33A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan

~$45 after MIR

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA2 3.5IN 8.5MS 7200RPM 32MB Hard Drive OEM *3YR MFR Warranty* ORSeagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA2 3.5IN 8.5MS 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive OEM *3YR MFR Warranty*

~$60 for the 1TB or $40 for the 500GB

Samsung SH-S223C 22X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM

~$22

The total is $430 with the 1TB hard drive or $410 with the 500GB hard drive.

So somehow I need to shave approximately $70 or so.

Thanks for looking and helping :)

Have you considered a netbook? The Aspire is 300$, slap a second 1Gb stick in there for 25$ and it would be pretty good for your friend.

They already have a laptop. This computer is like "central command" for printing and that sort of stuff.

Have you considered a DDR2 motherboard and ram as it will be much cheaper

Not really, but I want the computer to be as upgrade friendly as possible.

There is upgrade friendly and there is practical use of the system. They could use an atom system for what they want to use it for, i'm just saying they may aren't going to benefit from ddr3 at all even if you are trying to future proof them. Hell they probably will never need more then 4 gigs of ram for the lifespan of that pc

What about an i3 build on H55? I remember making one that came out to <$350 before. Not gonna go through that again though :P

^--- that seems a bit tough if you are considering building the whole tower lol

There doesn't seem that much you can do except save on a DDR2 Motherboard (Gigabyte S2H), drop down to an AMD II 245/250, and get a cheap sub-$30 case.
