My System Specs

Smile mid gaming for $600 need advice

Hi Im new to the forums, so here it goes

CPU: AMD phenom x2 550 dual core BE OEM :$85
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-770T USB 3 AMD 770 ATX $99
RAM: cheapo 2 GB (Kingston value ram 2x1gig ddr3 1333) $54
HDD: WD 640 caviar blue
CASE: thermaltake armour A90 $155
PS: included with case TT modular 850W
GFX: gigabyte 4850 512mb gddr3 256bit $95

for around $550cdn without shipping and taxes. I do plan on price matching too when i get some time.

I'm open to suggestions about the video card, i just want decent performance under $100, preferably ATI. Will only be using on a 19" monitor, nothing more than 512mb really needed. I dont have any plans to run crossfire in the future.

Also im not too sure which heatsink i should get for the 550, from my understanding i can use AM2/AM2+ coolers? The ram is not going to stay in there for long, just there to get a running system until i can afford better; the video card will only be in there for about a year or so. I know the power supply is overkill but the case combo is quite cheap. Plans to OC.

If theres any suggestions to shave some green or improve the system i'd love to hear it.

For the heatsink, get a CoolerMaster 212+, can't beat it for price/performance.

+1 for 212+ have it on my 555 be unlocked and overclocked and I have had no problems at all with that heat sink, and I am only using the one fan that came with it.

I would suggest to save another $80 or so and get a decent 2x2gb kit of ram. I see it as being more of a hassle to buy the budget set, upgrading, then selling the old set. You also said you don't plan on xfire in the future, so if you don't need all of the pcie 1x or pci slots of your selected board, you might be able to save some money by picking out a matx board.

The more money you can put into your video card the better.. Don't skimp out! :) you won't regret put some extra cash into a better video card. Look at the video cards that people are selling on the HWC forums, there are always good deals to be had.. on a gaming rig your video card is very important!

get the 240 or 250 cpu wise, giga has cheaper mobos that oc very well.
as above 212+
too expensive for the case, get a silverstone or cm under 50 buckers
gpu, you can squeeze in a 200-220$ gtx460
psu and ram try to hit used corsair or such
