My System Specs

Default I must be going senile: I'm an AMD phreak!

Hi all,
Newbie to the forum and I just pulled the trigger on this and it should be in my hands by next week. I'm retired (retarded) and have time to play games now.Well there goes the new outboard motor, what the heck I live in Florida and there is always time for the boat.
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER HAF 932 AMD Limited Edition AM-932-RWN1-GP Red Steel / Plastic / Mesh bezel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD7 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 XL ATX AMD Motherboard

Going to use my ULTRA X3 1000 PSU out of my current build along with the two XFX 5770's. Not sure about the memory yet. I'll just have to do some research and find out from current users what really works. Wish me luck and I'll post-up the results. Really enjoy this forum too , great bunch of guys here.

I honestly don't see why you made that upgrade, since you will see absolutely no difference in performance when playing games compared to your current quad. And you didn't have to buy a new motherboard; the old one would have housed the X6 chip fine. Now you'll need to purchase DDR3 RAM as well to use in the new board.

Hi Zero82z,
Thanks for the input. My current board is 2008 vintage and any upgrading for the x6 is done in the BIOS. I have 1801 in here now, and ASUS is up to BIOS 1903 Beta for this board. The last I heard the Turbo Core was unsupported. Also on this particular board with an x6 there are all kinds of memory issues and boot problems. The M4A series is better suited for the x6 and ASUS is putting more into the M4A series than the older M3A. So I decided to to go all AM3 and DDR3 memory too. Pretty soon the DDR2 will be a thing of the past. I did read that there wasn't a whole lot of performance gain between the 4 and six core in gaming; but I feel with this setup I'll be good for at least a couple of years. Thanks for the comments.

Smile New Builds

Welcome to HWC. I think you'll really enjoy this site. Enjoy the upgrade. I think you've done a good job of boosting your system for the next cpl o yrs. As for memory, a lot of people like G. Skill. I'm partial to Mushkin myself. For me, anything with lifetime warranty and good rma rep. will do.

Thank you 'dangtx' and 'fishing fanatic'. The new build will be my 'fun machine' while the one in my sig remains the family business and internet machine. I do like my current case the m998, it's huge, big and square (reminds me of a 'hummer') moves a lot of air, holds all I care to put in it. Alas not the new extended boards. But I really wanted to build a more up to date 'fun machine' that I could tinker with without pi$$n off wifey who puts up with my antics. I may even liquid cool the new one. Sure do admire the work that 'cruzn4ever' and others have done on this forum. Thanks for the input.

Hi all,
What a rough couple of days I've had with this mess. Order arrived on time good ol' NewEgg and FedEx. The case is phenomenal, plenty of room and not a blem on it. Started asy. on a board and box, 1 ram stick etc. etc. and mobo did absolutely nothing, no beep. Checked and rechecked connections etc. and thought bad CPU? After much frustration I tried my 965 in it and voilla it posted! Got Vista all installed and shut down. When I went to put the second stick of ram in the board It wouldn't go in the slot, weird I thought. Switched the sticks, and the one I had in the first slot would't go in the second slot either. Both sticks fit in slot 3&4 no sweat. Yup, defective ram slot. Upshot, just got back from the post office and RMA'd the board and CPU for refund. When the Egg credits my account, I'm going to get another AMD 965BE instead of the six core, and this time I'll get the GA-890FXA-UD5. So now we wait.

Quad core will be the sweet spot for future gaming I think (for some years). You picked some great hardware. Hope your new hardware returns in working condition!

For $20+ I'd recommend the X6 1055T which overclocks as well as the 1090T you first purchased. Good luck with your second delivery !
