Default Old Guy's first dream build and OC - Gulp!

Old Guys First OC Build

Hi. Im an old programmer. I have owned and repaired XT, 286, 386, 486, P1, P2, P3, P4, etc.

But, I have never built my dream machine or Overclocked.

Want to Build and OC a Core i7 930 to a stable 4.0

Has to be stable because I do contract programming work here in BC.
I also play games and do CAD work in Solidworks. Gaming cards are not good for CAD but they work for what I do.

Here's my initial (want) parts list. ($2300.00 CDA so far) mostly from bestdirect.ca

Mobo - ASUS Rampage III Extreme ATX LGA1366 X58 DDR3 4PCI-E16 PCI-E4 CrossFire SLI SATA3 USB3.0
CPU - Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor
G.SKILL F3-12800CL6T-6GBPI Pi Series 6GB 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL6-8-6-20 240PIN Triple Channel Kit
Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50 High Performance CPU Water Cooler
CASE - Coolermaster Haf 922 Mid Tower ATX Case Black 5X5.25 5X3.5INT Front Audio USB eSATA No PSU
HD - WD RE4 2TB 7200RPM 64MB 3.5" SATAII
PSU - Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan (CMPSU-750TX)
4 of Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120MM Case Fan 1450RPM 21DB 45.9CFM(push pull on H50 and top bottom)
Sapphire Radeon HD 5830 800MHZ 1GB 4.0GHZ GDDR5 PCI-E 2DVI HDMI DisplayPort Video Card
Pioneer BDR-205BK BLU-RAY DVDRW 12X SATA W/ Software
Pioneer DVR-118LBK 22X DVD Writer IDE Black OEM
Crucial RealSSD C300 2.5" 64GB SATA III (for Win7 64x boot drive and Visual Studio 2010 dev)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium FATAL1TY PCI-E 1X 24BIT Sound Card 7.1 Optical IN/OUT

Please feel free to question and advise on my above choices.
Like... Is the WD RE4 2TB 7200RPM 64MB 3.5" SATAII performance really worth $310 at egghead.ca?
Should I get 12 GB of ram because of CAD and programming or is 6 ok?

I really appreciate and help anyone can give.
Currently I'm running a cheap HP from FS

Thanks

Welcome to the forums (from one old guy to another)! What Island to you hail from?

As far as the build goes... first question I'd ask is how you use your audio. Do you need a stand-alone audio card, or would on-board be good enough (they've come a long way over the years.... ;) )? Main reason for asking is that the money saved from your audio card could go towards a much beefier vid card.

Get a 5770. There is not much difference besides price between the 5830.

Don't get a Creative soundcard. They don't have good support/drivers. I recommend ASUS' Xonar line.

No point getting a 4 PCI-E motherboard if you don't SLI, Why not choose Gigabyte's X58 UD3R?

The Corsair H50 isn't that good for overclocking. The Noctua D14 is a good air cooler.

2TB for $310 seems a lot. You could probably RAID 5-7 of the Seagate 500GB ones for less

That's it from me for now :)

That is the exact mobo/cpu/ram combo I just bought.

The build looks good. I've never been able to find out what is physically different between the caviar black 2TB and the RE4 "Enterprise" version. Different firmware, but physically...? WD claims a larger MTBF for the RE4, but there is basically no difference in performance. If you plan on running RAID you want the RE4, but otherwise, nothing wrong with the Black.

Do you have a specific purpose for the sound card? IE: audio editing, or extremely high end speaker system? The onboard sound nowadays is actually pretty decent if you are just running a standard 2.1 or 5.1 speaker system.

From the looks of that list you seem to know what you are doing m8.

My only picky bit is the DVD drive. It's an IDE model. Get the DVR-218DBK model, if you really need 2 writers. That Blueray drive also writes regular DVD's.

Also, use shopbot.ca or pricecanada.com to find the best prices to do your pricematching. You should be able to save a few dollars by doing that from NCIX. (BestDirect and NCIX are part of the same group of companies, and ship out of the same warehouse).

And don't forget your OS.

I would swap the psu out for a HX650/750 as they are modular vs the non-modular TX series from Corsair, for easier cable management.

I would recommend getting an XFX video card over Sapphire due to the double lifetime warranty unless you don't mind the normal average warranty coverage and you're just going for the price instead.

I would go with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus cpu cooler as they are great coolers for the price ($30 from NCIX.com).

You can get 3 x 1TB WD Caviar Black drives for about the same price at that 2TB and set it up in raid instead.
