Default New build

I've been looking at building a new computer for a few weeks now, and I've been reading quite a few reviews and whatnot, and I'd like some input on what I've come up with so far.

I'll be using this primarily for games/general use, with a smattering of photoshop. Aiming for around $800 or so, probably purchasing from Memory Express since they've got stores in Edmonton, so I can get stuff in person. I'm certainly not a fanboy of AMD/ATI but from what I've seen, lower end processors favour AMD from a price perspective and ATI graphics cards are currently better than nVidia's offerings. Anyway, here's what I'm looking at:

CPU: 955 x4 BE C3 - $180
Mobo: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO OR Gigabyte GA 880GA-UD3H - $120
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24 - $125
GPU: HD 5770 - $160-180
Case/PSU: Sonata III w/ Earthwatts 500W - $100
HD: 1TB SATA III WD Caviar Black - $90

The biggest thing I want input on is the mobo. I've had luck with Asus in the past, but from the reviews I've been reading, it seems that their quality isn't quite as good as it used to be. I'm not going for an extreme overclock, so I doubt I'll need a better mobo, but please let me know if you think otherwise. For the gpu, I've pretty much decided on the 5770, but need to take a closer look at the different models available and decide if I want a reference model or one with an aftermarket cooler. Thanks in advance for your input!

whats your current system?

squeeze in a 5850 for games.
duallie cpu for now if you have. add a giga board to the mix.
lots of coin for 4 gig kit

Current system isn't worth scavenging, which is also part of the reason why I didn't really consider the 5850 card. The 5770 blows my current setup out of the water, and I don't run enough high end games to justify doubling the gpu costs.

As for the RAM, the cheapest 1333 I see on newegg.ca is $97, and the lowest 1600 at $106. The Mushkin has a name I trust, better timings and a $20 MIR that'll put it on par price-wise. The other kit I was looking at was the G.Skill Ripjaws, which is again priced around $120

Thinking about it a little more, you do make a good point that I don't really need the quad core. I'm starting to think that the x2 555 seems just as good for significantly less.

nope. 240 or 250 for you. cheap, good core, oc like mad. 70-90 dollar giga mobo will give you plenty fun as well.

and then when you look at the savings...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm what could you do with them? :)

So true, the wonders of saving money. can give you so much more lee way(however you spell it). But yeah i say go for a x 250 but if you feel for a quad core and you don't mind spending extra $$ then thats up to you. For the mobo i suggest Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 comes with SATA 3 and usb 3.0 and its 80-90 CAD
