The motherboard has 2 pci-e slots and does crossfire.
I won't be gaming on it, but want to run 3 or 4 monitors
Can I install my 8800GT OC2 and *any* other pci-e card (ie- cheap)
and run 4 monitors?
I was just talking to a guy at greenlyph and he said only identical cards would work - i told him that i didn't care about crossfire, but he said that i couldn't mix cards (?!?!?!)

Sounds wrong to me, but i'm not sure how I would run an nvidia card along with an ati card (would the drivers get along?)

What two video cards will work in this board:

Newegg.ca - ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard

thanks
mike

sli wont work unless you hack drivers. keep ya card if its ok for now, or get some more cash for a 5850(and your card for physx)

If you're not concerned about crossfire you'll have no problems running either two nvidia cards or two ATI cards of similar models. They don't have to be exactly the same, but IIRC the Nvidia 2XX series cards don't play nice in the sandbox with 8XXX or 9XXX series cards so you'd have to get your hands on something from those two ranges in order to work with your current card.

For the time being I'm not concerned with SLI - I just want to have 3 or more monitors.
So Windows 7 can't make ATI and an nvidia cards work in on the same motherboard (non-sli)?

Seems like a step backwards, because a few years ago i was running XP with 3 monitors - 2 off an ATI X850 and 1 off a (1999) Voodoo3 2000 (PCI).

If I did put an ATI next to an nvidia card - what would happen?

Hey, maybe I can dig out that 11 year old voodoo card for the 3rd monitor : )

thoughts?

It apparently can be done (running both drivers) but last I heard it's a pain in the butt to get them working together. If you just want a third monitor (any card will do 2), have you looked at the usb VGA products?
