Silent budget gaming build

It's been 6 years since I had a new computer. I will be using this computer for fps games, watching movies and browsing internet. Suggestions are very much appreciated.


1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
gaming/folding/photoshop and indesign

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
1000-1200 after tax

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Vancouver, preferably NCIX and Anitec

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I have recently bought these items

hyper 212+
Samsung optical drive

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
I plan to overclock to 3.6ghz

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
3-4 weeks from now

9. What resolution do you use?
1920X1080

I would reconsider your memory choice, the memory latency is a bit high if your gaming, but thats just my opinion when getting fragged in battlefield, maybe its brain lag I dunno, I tried CL9 vs CL7, wow big difference and even some of the lesser mhz memory with lower latencies like CL 6 -5-4 can be better than some of the newer CL9

dont get me started, shopping for memory atm and having trouble finding good stuff for the $$$

other than that both builds look good, good setups on both.

noticing you chose an ATI gpu, I would go with the amd mobo for the 890 chipset and the included crossfire loaded software. would work better with the gpu, utilize the memory better and consume less power.

no comment on the AMD build, but for just a little bit more, i think intel is a bit faster... please dont flame me, i m not intel fanboy, i just had bad experiences with AMD in stock config (1 emachine, 1 HP, 1 gateway, which the latter is my station at work) lol yah i know they are not the best brand out there.. but yeah..

anywayyy... if u chose the amd system, always check the motherboard QVL or go to GSkill website, find the memory and see if your mobo is listed under the motherboard compatibility list. I m saying this because from what i read on reviews, some rams are optimized for i5/i7 but not that compatible with amd system.

a suggestion for the intel system, get the p7p55d-e series with the added usb3 and sata3...and i believe the -e series have more phase than the previous one??? i m not sure..... i got the -e pro version and i m loving it!

i know asus is a good brand for motherboard, but i m not sure if they make a good video card, if i were you, i would chose XFX just because of their double lifetime warranty in case if u need to sell the card to another person.

And since you already have the SSD, why not go for the WD green 1.5TB or 2TB for storage? u dont need the wd black 640gb speed.... just my 0.02

EDIt: forgot that u need a silent pc..... i would suggest go to silent pc review site....the members there are crazy about quiet pcs....

x6 all the way, good choice of cooler.
if you go 64 bit you may add more ram later. it shouldnt run you more than your budget if you do your homework

the AMD will be faster... i own a i5 750 and a Phenom II 945 and the 945 gains better performance all'round. Your config uses the 965, so the performance will be even greater than mine.

BUT

the stock AMD cooler is loud.. budget for a silent cooler if that is the direction you want to go... STOCK the i5 system will be more... silent, and use less power.

Lastly, the seagate 500GB 7200.12 is a single platter and faster drive than the 640GB WD-BLACK.

If it's faster, would it be louder? I'm leaning towards the amd build, but still not sure about the X6 core. Most games these days only use 2 cores (may be incorrect).

it's not louder. In-fact the spin noise is quieter on the .12, and both drive's access "click" is near silent.
I can't comment on the x6's gaming ability versus the i5

I like your build in AMD, but I think you can have much better in your budget?

The AMD build will be rock solid...but I would change the seagate for a WD. If you search for silence you will ear the seagate scratch all the time. with a WD for storage you can activate the acoustic management make them dead silent.

i would suggest the storm sniper black edition case, it has a nob to control the 240mm fans (midtower) so that when your not using it heavily you can crank down the speed and then when you run a game or do vid editing you could crank it up!:) comes with a sleek black interior finish to, and if your only going to be doing game go for 4x core as you won't be using the 2 extra cores! when gaming and for the photo shop i don't now how much it juice it needs...

great choice for vid card, and if you have some extra money go for the crosshair IV great overclocking capabilities!
