My System Specs

Default P4 is tired / new build

1st post here, this is a great forum glad to have found it! My computer is 7 years old, slowing down and I want to replace it in the next month. Helped my son on a build last year and want to give it a try on another one.

My use is primarily internet, word processing, music, very little gaming, may do some rudimentary video editing with the new build. Not really on a budget. My parts will be purchased locally I think the local shop gets their parts from NCIX. No oc

Case - Coolermaster cm690
CPU - i7 not sure 920,930,860?
MOBO - asus P6T
PS - Silverstone 650w
RAM - Mushkin 6gb
HD - It was suggested to get 2 is that better? I think 1 was for the os
Seagate Barracuda 320 gig
DVD - LG
Monitor - Samsung 2494sw 24"
OS - Windows 7 home

Is a video card necessary with this board?
Is the i7 more of a gaming cpu or am I getting the wrong impression and this will be a garden variety build in a year or so?

Looking for suggestions

Thanks
Jim

Do you have a budget? say like $1000 or less? does it all have to be new stuff. Lots of good used stuff around if you are not into hardcore gaming etc. also you didnt mention a case. I assume you are going to use the same one as your P4 is in?

The recommended case was a Coolermaster cm 690
This will be an all new build. A rough estimate is around 1600 dollars

that seems alot especially if you are asking about not getting a graphics card. thats gonna be a fairly high-end if you spend that money. from what you say you are gonna use it for I wouldnt think you would need to go over 1g. but lets see waht others have to say

as for hdd's getting 2 is always good, get and SSD for OS and a HDD for the rest.

witch version of the asus P6T? and yes you do need a video card. a simple dx11 ati card for around 100-200$ should be enough for lite gaming

for 1600$ you can get a decent high-end PC i would think

cpu+mobo for 500-600$ i7 930 with P6T
Ram ddr3 6gig for 150-200$ (wy mushkin more expensive for your use)
case under 99$
PSU under 150 (corsaire 750 for under 110$)
HDD 1TB WD Black for 100$
SDD around 200$ should be enough for you
monitor 250-300$
dvd - 20-30$
windows 7 home 100$
cooler 212+ 30$
video card : 5750/5650 130-160$ (or witch ever card for the price range)

all that for around 1500-1600$, less with PM and choices

You are not gaming are you?

A TX 750 is way overkill, but at the same time, at 106$ from directcanada, .... You could go OCZ though for cheaper...

as for the GPU, if you don't really use it that much, 130$ max on that....

i7 930 + x58A-UD3R <--- I INSIST ON THIS MOBO!!! ITS AWESOME! Gigabyte does the best x58 mobos and the best BIOS, and this one has USB 3.0 and SATA 6gbps

Some random 3x2gb DDR3 1600 is great, after that it is wasted money

Case... You want it to look professional or not? The Lian-Li K62 is great for noob builders and has ALOT of features. It doesn't look that professional though. Lian-Li K60 no window looks good though, and still great

Harddrive, I would suggest either a 640gb Caviar Black or a 1tb Caviar Black or the stata 6gbps variant that is even better... As for SSD, a 30gb SuperTalent or OCZ vertex is great

Monitor should be <200$... A VH222H from directcanada is 175$, great value

DVD burner obviously <30$, a 24x

Cooler is obvious to me... a Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B at 37$ at directcanada crushes most for x58 and doesn't do much noise

This should be below 1600$ for sure and is the best you can get for your money

I suggest you buy from directcanada by the way

Oh and some TIM... OCZ freeze or MX-2 or MX-3 are great

Oh and if you have no other way of getting an OS, 100$ for Windows 7 Home
