Default Upgrading in the future

Here is my current system:

Phenom II X3 720 (3.2Ghz O.C.)
4GB DDR2-800
Asus M4A78 Pro
XFX 8800GT 512mb
500W OCZ StealthXtreme

I'm looking to make some upgrades over the next year, but I'm not exactly sure which path I should be taking. I'm replacing the 8800 with a 5770 for starters, which I think is a reasonable upgrade. I'd like to CF these down the line, which of course means a new motherboard with two x16 slots. If I buy a new motherboard, I'm wondering if it's worth going AM3 and replacing the DDR2 with DDR3 ram. Will there be an appreciable difference here? Other benefits? I intend to replace my PSU at some point with something of a higher calibre. Are there any recommendations for brands and wattage for this system with 5770 CF? Would it be better just to get another AM2 board and reuse the ram?

depending on what you need it for, get a 5850 for gaming now.

if you need more cpu power, maybe an i5/7 might do the trick

CHEAPER route?!?! Replacing 1 card and possibly a mobo is MORE expensive than a total overhaul into high performance stuff?? WHAT?!

A 5770 is a fair upgrade but CF'd I believe a 5850 is still ahead a bit. PSU, I'd get a 600W or more for 5770's.. Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, they've been good. DDR3 or 2? I'd personally just recycle the ram+board I have just because I'm cheap, though if I were upgrading I'd aim for SATA3.

I would get a 5850 just because CF'd 5770 is about $400 which is equivalent to the 5850. Then if Asus doesn't be a **** and not support the Phenom X6's, i would get a Phenom X6 sometime in the future and OC the crap out of it...

Graphics card is the only thing I'd peg in that rig that needs to be upgrading, and you say you're already doing that.

I'd actually go for the 5850; you MIGHT be able to run a single one off of a 500W PSU; however if you have any plans of crossfiring a second one down the line you definitely need a bigger PSU, such as a 750W.

If you wish to remain in the green camp then it's certainly cheaper to get a processor upgrade to say Phenom II 955 or similar and overclocking it.

Mind you it won't be huge upgrade but RAM is an expensive upgrade due to volatile price and you might as well put DDR3, if you were upgrading.

By upgrading to an AM3 chip, you have one component ready for future upgrade (Keep in mind that there's no such thing as 'future proofing' at least not in computer world.)

After upgrading processor, consider getting Radeon HD 5850. Which would definitely boost not only gaming performance but it would certainly help with DirectX11 Compatibility.

I really don't think OCZ is up to par with good power supply even if it's a 'brand name' power supply.

I agree with clone63 about the power supply, definitely Corsair, Antec, Seasonic or even Silverstone if it's on sale. (Goes on sale at NCIX quite often it seems..)

Upgrade Your
CPU
Video Card
PSU (Preferably with the Video Card)

This would get you going with upgrades, if you go with other i5 or i7, you are practically looking at a new machine.

Not exactly an 'upgrade'

Go with a gpu upgrade. It'll give you more bang for your buck than a complete overhaul of your system or a cpu upgrade which won't do much considering you already have 3 cores.
