Just signed up and looking for some comments on my " Next Best Friend"

MB - Asus P6X58D Premium

CPU - Intel core i7 960 3.2 Ghz

RAM - Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C7D

GPU - BFG GeForce GTX 295

Case - Antec 1200

PS - Corsair HX 850 w

HD - WD Velociraptor 3000HLFS 300Gb SATA2 10000 rpm

Fans / Heat sink - will max out the case and the largest sink that will fit

OS - Win 7 Pro 64 bit

Be gentle, I am old and can not take too much ....

Looks like a decent build, but I'd question spending the money on a raptor these days unless you're getting a deal on it used (SSD's + decent storage drive FTW). I'd also hold off on the GFX card until we get some idea of pricing/performance on fermi (hopefully in a couple of weeks). If it releases on time, no matter what kind of performance/availability we see, it will have an affect on pricing across the board for GFX cards.

Welcome to the forums BTW!!! I think you'll find the folks here to be relatively Noob friendly so long as you're not coming in with a heavy fanboi attitude. :)

Welcome aboard HWC.....looks solid, certainly stick to the GTX 295 if you already have it!!

Forget the Velociraptor Drive..wayyy to much money.
As Mr Wilson suggested, instead of the Velo Drive, go with a nice Intel G2 80GB SSD (for OS and a few Apps), and a WD 640GB Black Hard Drive for your Data, both those drives can be had for about the cst of a single Velociraptor and offer far better performance.

Also a Corsair HX750W would be more than enough power for your GTX 295......

Showing my Noobness here. But the what your saying is that the idea would be to use the SSD for the Op sys and maybe my high use Apps and the rest on the WD black. Will have to look into that ... Hmmm ... need a Beer. I think much better when drinking

^^^ That is correct...I run W7, Office 2007 and a bunch of Applications off my SSD and have all my other stuff, music, photos, movies etc saved on 2 x 640GB WD Black Drives.

Stick with the 295 as your card; you don't need anything better than that at the moment. As well, a 750W PSU should do you fine.
