Default First Build EVER!

Heres my builld that I've been gatering parts for, Usually select parts to have them put together, but I've decided that I want to build one myself. Some advice small tricks that most new builders won't know would be apperciated (if theres one). I've done a lot of research, read bunch of system build logs, guides and hopefully it will perpare me when everything is ready to go.

ASUS P6X58D Premium Motherboard
i7 920 Processor (Will probly wait till the 930 is out)
Corsair HX1000W Modular Powersupply
Zalman CNPS9900 CPU Cooler
Corsair Dominator 3X 2GB DDR3 RAM 1600mhz
Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X (will even go crossfire, or might change depending how the Nvidia GTX480 performs)
1x SSD (not set yet but will probly be an OCZ Vertex)
2x 1TB 75000rpm Western Digital Black SATA HD
2X DVD writer
1x Wireless card (not set on the brand/model yet or I should stick to wireless USB sticks?).

All this thrown into a Silverstone Raven Case. I know the Raven is not exatly a friendly case to work with, I've read the review and it seems I need a long SATA wire, is 3ft long enough? for those who have experience with this case.

I need some input regarding the reliability of SSDs, I know they eventually loose their ability to write, but whats the timeline we are looking at here? 3-5yr? this is if strictly use it for OS and critical program.

Thanks for your time and input.

make sure u get raven 1 not 2
and you dont really need long sata wires
remember the io ports are facing up therefore the Sata ports are at the lower side and facing towards the hard drives already
therefore you dont need long wires

you probably work too much in mines those last months...
SSD is far much better than Raptor. and will cost far way less

to the OP . If you plan to get teh 120 Vertex ...good, but if you plan on the 60gb, you better with the Intel 80 gb they are faster than the 60 GB

I 2nd the intel notion. Intels just perform much better than the Vertex. Hell, even the Kingston V+ is faster.
And the 920 needs D0 stepping, but you probably know that already ;)

Why? Sure the D0 stepping's are golden to a degree, but I've seen just as much on the OC out of a C0 stepping 920.

As for the build, I'd change the Cooler out for a Zalman Flex + CM R4 Fans. The CNPS9900 is good but not as good as Zalmans latest cooler.

Other way around. Vertex > Intel.

^yup. ST has very good point I have a D0 and a C0 know if i was pushing for the limit then ok my d0 makes a difference but if your looking for 3.8 4.0 then getting with a c0 is pretty easy too.

Velociraptors are dead.

Enthusiast HDDs (Caviar Black, Spinpoint F3, etc.) perform damn-near on par or even better, for less money and a LOT less money / GB. As for SSDs, they're MUCH faster than the Velociraptors, if more expensive / gigabyte. Either way, don't get a Velociraptor.

Anyway, set those Blacks in RAID 0, give them a partition near the edge for the OS and you'll be more than happy with the performance.
