Default Upgrade to Parents PC

Hey Guys, my parents recently asked me to help them update their computer. The computer is on the older side and is running short on it's life span. At the moment it is running a.... wait for it.... Intel Pentium 4 519K single core processor at 3.06 gigahertz. The motherboard in the computer is an Intel D915GLVG. I was wondering what i should do. Right now i was looking at this option:
Intel Pentium Dual core E5300
Asus P5G41C-M
Silverstone Strider Essential 500w PSU
??? Ram(supports DDR2&3)
??? Video Card
Overall right now on ncix with PM is 192.28
What type of ram should i use and how much of it should i use, also I have no idea on what video card to put into it. It is mostly used to watch HD videos and to play basic games, such as sims 3 and other family friendly titles. I have everything else needed for the build. Thanks in advance for the help.

A HD 5670 or 9600GT should be more than enough

Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 775MHZ 512MB 4GHZ PCI-E VGA DVI HDMI Lite Retail Video Card - DirectCanada

Newegg.ca - BIOSTAR VN9603TD52 GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Just get 4gb of the cheapest ddr2 you can get. If you're gonna end up overclocking it, even the cheapest ram will give you more than you need to max out that E5300.

If you want an even cheaper build you could probably get by no problem with an Athlon II 240/245/250 (whichever you get the best deal on), and a 785g motherboard (integrated HD 4200 will probably be more than fast enough for what your parents will want). You can get 785g motherboards that support either DDR2 or DDR3, so take your pick and go for it (make sure the board you pick supports the memory type you want to use). These athlons are faster than the e5300 as well. Consider it anyway. IMO any computer for <$600 including everything except graphics card (if required) is a much better bang for buck with AMD. Intel is fine, and above that price you really have to look at what you want, but below that price its hard to beat.

also...for the psu consider switching it out for a budget corsair or seasonic. 400cx, ss-400, etc. A good quality 400w psu is more than enough unless you are sticking a quad core and decent gaming graphics card in.

I would go with a cheap AM3 system. Like what was suggested above, a 785G mobo and a Athlon II 240 or something and if your parents are actually going to be playing Sims 3 and other games then get some cheap video card like that 9600gt or a GTS240. If no gaming is being done then jsut the onboard would be fine for HD video....

Agreed, if required. From what I have read the integrated will run Sims 3 fine. If it isn't able to play at a high enough resolution (though I don't see that being a problem given it is the Sims) or frames per second, then add a graphics card (hd 4670 would be a good cheap card for it).
