Q6600 build?

So i bought a gigabyte ud3l, with a q6600 coming from ebay, 8800 gt, Patriot viper series 1066 4gb ddr2. Is this a decent build or should i have went with an i7 becuase im just getting rid of my vostro 200 which scored about 10 000 3d mark 06 points but its overclocked to shit. Also are the q6600's pretty much obsolete?

It's 2 gens old, but still a pretty potent little chip...........

well im running a 1.6 ghz with 1 mb cache (e2140) overclocked to 2.6 ghz so should i expect a large performance increase? yeah but look at youre video card, what scores do you get in 3d mark?

btw i can get a evga gtx 280 for $220 used but i just dont have the money.

Heh... not sure what 3Dmark I get with it, but it puts out a pretty solid 8.9K PPD...... :)

If you're currently running a 2.6G e2140 I'd expect you'll seem some pretty major gains from the quad 6600 once you get it dialed in. Cache alone would be an improvement, you should be able to easily get 3G+, and you've also got 4 full cores vice the 2 slightly crippled ones on the e2140.

Depending on what you paid for the package, you probably got a pretty decent upgrade for the price.

ehh not bad but i think i payed too much for the q6600 from ebay( $160 with shipping and everything)

motherboard, patriot viper series 1066 ddr2, big ass heatsink, came to $270

i sold my vostro 200 to my brother for $300 and he is giving me his case and i payed $80 for my 8800 gt a few months ago, and im picking up a used silverstar 600w power supply for $70

so probably $580 than the technically free case, not bad or what?

oh wait take $580 and take off $300 for my vostro 200, hahah $280

I'm rocking a q6600 right now, I think the chip still has a lot of life in it and once it begins to show it's age I'll throw a linux on it and it'll be like a new computer.

My Q6600 is showing it's age, then again it's probably the longest I've ever held onto the same CPU. They're a pretty good workhorse and probably still clock for clock faster than anything AMD has put out. It gets down right depressing though when I compare it to a I5 or an I7 in 3DMV.

Ran 4.05 Stable the hole time.

This was Intel's Best CPU, Hands down

I've only ever benchmarked folding with a VM but...

clock for clock, an unlocked (to quad) AMD 550BE will beat the Q6600 in PPD by 20% or something close to that.

But anyway, I have a Q6600 and for general use and gaming speedwise, there is no reason to go i7. You need a specific reason to need the i7, in my opinion.

Overall what you are talking about for a machine will be pretty decent.

Far as I can tell you should have gone with 1156. Even the cheaper i3s can beat a Q6600, and that's without taking into consideration that LGA775 is a dying platform. As far as I'm concerned it's one of the best C2Q chips, but it's still a C2Q chip.
