Default New AMD build?

Backstory: My sister's old computer died. I'm going to "loan" her my wife's machine (E6400 Penryn/P5N-E SLI/XP) because she can't afford a new build. Now obviously I have to replace my wife's machine. It's standard browsing/email/multimedia application use, but I'm also going to set it up to Boinc & GPU Fold when she's not using it.

I've collected a case, PSU, HDD, and DVD drive already for it. And I've got an 8800GTS512 that will go in it for folding. Now comes the hard part.

I've got about $300 budgeted for the rest of it before tax(mobo/cpu/ram). It looks like 4GB of ram is going to cost about $95-100 whether it's DDR2 or DDR3. So that leaves approximately $200 to put into a mobo and CPU. My last few builds have been Intel, so I thought I'd give the green team some cash this time around. Unfortunately I haven't kept up to date on the AMD stuff, so what would CPU and mobo would you get with $200 or so? Thanks in advance for your suggestions HWC.

Oh, yeah, mild OC, nothing major. If it ever BSOD's she might kill me in my sleep. Must have a PCI slot for the wireless card.

I'd say your absolute best bet would be to get this, but its definitively overkill for her use:

NCIX.com - Buy AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor AM2+ 3.0GHZ 8MB Cache 125W 45NM Retail Box - HDZ940XCGIBOX In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2 AMD760G mATX AM3/AM2+ PCI-E DDR2 SATA2 Video Sound GBLAN Motherboard - GA-MA78LM-S2 In Canada.

Its a little over budget, but if you can find some used RAM for 80$ or less, it fits pretty nicely, unless you know and trust Wintec, I don't know it, so I am not recommending it.

Otherwise, going for either a Phenom II X2 or for an Athlon II X4 seems like a good idea.

i just picked up a m4a785td-v evo and a pII 550 black edition for just over your budget, as recomended on HC. If your not gonna game then the MB probably has alot of features you wont need , but if you do its a great budget gamer. Here's the HC review on it ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO and M4A785TD-M EVO AM3 Motherboards Review

you say you want a light overclock, perhaps the v evo and a 75$ athlon II x3 rana 435 would do you well. It supposedly overclock's easy but can't extreme overclock like a black edition. With that mobo you will also might be able to unlock another core on that processor(luck of draw) . Plus when you got money to upgrade your board is prime for a decent am3 setup. However if you plan on gaming at 1080+ then you should probably avoid the athlon as they dont have a l3 cache, resolutions below that and the aII x3 rana 435 seems to perform well near the 550 BE(which also can unlock
toms hardware has a few cpu test's on gta4, left for dead, far cry 2, below 1080p the rana's held there own near the wolfdales(in some cases) and 550 black edition http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2....0.1,1401.html

Wait for more opinions though as i'm not an expert, just my suggestion's

Sugar, I'm gonna Have to agree with the poster above me.

That EVO Board is bar none full of awesome and very capable of bringing out the best in an X2 550.

So go with that combo for sure. Absolutely excellent setup, throw some G.SKill RIp Jaws in there and your perfect for a good while.

Thanks for your opinions so far guys. I just got an interesting offer from a member here. A Phenom II x4 955, Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2H + 4gb ddr2 ram corsair 1066 and it would just fit in the budget. So a faster CPU with a mobo that has less options. Which she doesn't need. Any opinions on that bundle? I won't name names here, as the offer was private.

I wish I'd kept up more with the Green Team's stuff. Off to do some more research

Your offer that you received is pretty good. You can always try unlocking a Phenom II if you want to buy new.

Btw, cheap DDR2 RAM. Buy OCZ Vista Upgrade PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit

I'd take a 550 black edition and GA-MA770T-UD3P. Since you've got an Nvidia card you won't need Crossfire support. See if you can unlock the CPU (and get an aftermarket heatsink).

Get a 550 and unlock it.... typical is 3.8ghz and running as quad. You'll need a Hyper 212 hsf though.

This is what I've been using and the prices the last time I did the build:

$30.35 Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink AM2 AM3 LGA1366 LGA775 LGA1156 120MM SKU: 41337
$113.98 AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Dual Core Processor Socket AM3 3.1GHZ 7MB Cache 80W Retail Box SKU: 39335
$132.99 Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P AMD790X ATX AM3 DDR3 2PCI-E SATA2 RAID Sound GLAN Motherboard SKU: 36174

For the CPU, get a Phenom II X2 550BE (Currently 104$ at Newegg.ca) Newegg.ca - AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
Reason: One of the best overclockers, and unlockers. I have my 550BE running on 4 Cores @ 3.2Ghz. Of course, you can go higher than that, but i don't want to due to fan noise.

For the motherboard, depending on whether you want DDR3 or DDR2, you can get a Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H (DDR2 + Crossfire) or Gigabyte GA-MA786GMT-UD2H (DDR3 + Onboard graphics and HDMI) Both are 99$ and both are good overclockers. (Also supports CPU unlocking)
