Default This Budget AMD vs. Budget Intel

Did some work for my dads friend on his old Compaq computer. He said it just won't fire up anymore so he dropped it off, gave me some cash, and told me to take a look and try to see what is wrong. (The cash is for payment, not for parts). I took a look at the specs that are on the case via sticker and this thing is old not ancient, but old.
  • 900MHz AMD something
  • 128MB RAM
  • 40GB HDD
  • CD-DRIVE
  • FLOPPY
  • 250W PSU
When I took off the side pannel it was almost as bad as badartcad's mom's computer seen here: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...ur-pc-lol.html

This thing was bad, the worst part was, some of the dust, and what I think was mold was damp, and there apeared to be moth wings... Yuck. Anywho, I removed ever componant, dusted, [compressed] aired it, and put it all together. Thing looks like a million bucks (its probably worth $25 ).

Chances are this thing is toast. It wont boot into Windows Milenium, nor will it pick up the VGA signal - tried multiple monitors. Replaced the BIOS battery (I think that is what it is) and still no luck. He wants a new computer, a real cheap one because he does almost nothing on it. So here are the two I whipped up off the top of my head:

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
1) Basically backing up/ ripping/ buring music and video. This guy has a killer home audio system and he is constantly playing around with music. No real gaming of anykind. May be used to watch movies and surf the net.

2) <$500

3) Canada. Most likely NCIX via PM

4) Brand does not matter one bit.

5) Periferals, Monitor, Speakers, and case.

6) Yes. There are some budget systems people are looking for, but this needs to be like... value village budget

7) No overclocking

8) <Q1 2010

Sorry for the bad formatting...

These are pretty cheap, and I am thinking the AMD one is to go for. Any comments?

I would use the CX400 instead coz BFG doesn't know how to rate their PSU's. I would go on Craigslist or something and get a cheap 3800+ and use the money saved on a crazy sound card.

Ditch the graphics card, he doesn't need it if he doesn't game. Buy a decent 785/780G Motherboard and a Phenom II x2 or other CPU that unlocks. Might also want cheaper ram, possibly more of it. Done.

Why more than 2GB of RAM? This is going to be 32-bit XP. Although, I can ditch the 800MHz Corsair stuff and get 667MHz Kingston NCIX.com - Buy Kingston ValueRAM KVR667D2N5/2G PC2-5300 2GB 1X2GB DDR2-667 240PIN DIMM Memory - KVR667D2N5/2G In Canada. and price match for 53.72.

Corsair = 70.67
Kingston = 53.72
Difference = 16.95

Drop the Video card, that would give an extra 78.99. Add 16.95 to that, I have 95.94 extra there.

So whats a good motherboard that can unlock a Phenom II X2 and a CPU that will not add more than $95? Or this might be easier if you dont want to think lol... You have $205 for a motherboard and processor.

This CPU if you want to try unlocking: NCIX.com - Buy AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Dual Core Processor Socket AM3 3.1GHZ 7MB Cache 80W Retail Box - HDZ550WFGIBOX In Canada. paired with almost any 780G/785G.

OR, this CPU if you don't want to bother unlocking and want to use that cheaper motherboard: NCIX.com - Buy AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad Core Processor Socket AM3 2.6GHZ 2MB Cache 95W Retail Box - ADX620WFGIBOX In Canada.

9600GS is usually around ~$60 and using Badaboom with CUDA may be nice... I would go with the AMD build if you want to be more risky, Intel for a sure-fire build.
