You probably already know this stuff but;
A good practice for trouble shooting is to unplug the things you don't need just to get into the BIOS (unplug Rom drives, HD's, extra cards) to eliminate as many conflicts as possible.
Double check all remaining connections. Re-seat your ram (that board has the newish Q-DIMM only one side clicks kinda thing) Looks like ram in the blue 2nd and 4th slots according to this review - check your manual.
Apparently the Clear CMOS switch is on the rear IO by the ps/2 kbd socket (strange place and a little too handy imho)

Thanks MonsterSound.

Yeah, the only other peripheral I've got installed is the soundcard so I'll remove that as well. I did try removing the HDD earlier but that did not help. I'll try again when I remove the audio.

I used the clear cmos button many times but have zero idea if it's working so thus I removed the battery to reset the mobo.

martin_metal_88: they were xmas gifts purchased thru Newegg.

Yes, a cold reset is a good idea, it's just waiting while the battery is out; that is a pain.
Hang in there, you'll sort it out.
A bad/corrupted MB can be exchanged.
I once had a no-post because of an intermittantly faulty DVD-rom; go figure.
I'll assume you are not now using 4 sticks of ram for your troubleshooting as you're on the right track.

Yes, using 2 sticks for troubleshooting. I hauled everything out and even re-pasted and seated the cpu and hsf. I'm not sure what the minimum hardware is required to get everything to run but I first tried just the cpu/hsf hooked up (nothing else incl. vid card). Nada. I then put the 2 sticks of RAM in and same thing. That's where I've left it at as it's getting late and I'm frustrated. I removed the cmos battery again and will leave it overnight. I'm wondering if it's the cpu that's hosed? Another thing I noticed is the psu fan doesn't spin either when trying to boot. Does it only spin once everything else is running?

I thought I was pretty good at building systems, having built quite a few over the years. But I'm stumped on this one. Aaaargh!

Swap out the power supply. P/S Fan not spinning doesn't sound good (maybe something about this model p/s I don't know but...). Even if you only have a lower powered unit, you won't need much power to POST.
Having a bunch of spare parts is a big help in troubleshooting, swaping out one part at a time.
Tried those two ram sticks, so try the other two. Tried this p/s, so try another.
Don't try things endlessly. Rarely it's the CPU. Eliminating parts as probably not being bad, may lead you to the MB being the culprit (check the MB socket for signs of non-uniformity).
Sounds like you know what you are doing. And get some rest.

Thanks again, MonsterSound.

It's Sunday a.m. and I'm back at it. I ruled out the psu by hooking it back up to the original Q6600/P5Q-E board and it worked so I'm happy about that. The mobo manual even lists the HX620 as a recommended power source. I also tried a new cmos battery and powered up the Core i5 after letting it sit overnight and still no go. So I'm going to be giving NewEgg a call tomorrow to see about RMA'ing the mobo and probably the cpu too just in case. Meanwhile today I'll still try a few things but I think I've exhausted the possibilities.

Although this is frustrating I still enjoy building systems and I know once I get it working it'll be bliss.

Don`t RMA the cpu for nothing. We see dead cpu only few time in a life. I personally saw one only 1 time after many years in the market. You only have sign of a dead mobo.

^ Thanks M_m_88. I was thinking the same thing after the fact. I will just send the mobo to start with. If it still causes a problem then I'll see about the memory. After that...new stuff but not ASUS even though I've used their mobos almost exclusively. I've got everything repacked now and will put my original mobo back in for the time being.
