But AM2+ boards don't, and they support AM3 CPUs. However, I think it's worth it for the future-proofing, and 8GB is far from necessary. 4GB in a gaming PC is fine. Not to mention DDR2 and DDR3 are just about the same price right now.

I would go AMD. If you're more worried about value for your money and not so much overclocking and processing power that, let's face it, you probably don't need (no matter how cool it is) it's the better route especially since you said upgrading bewtween sockets is iffy for you- AMD is saying they're planning to make things backward compatible to make themselves competitive with Intel. I guess they're trying to carve a niche for themselves among enthusiasts with light wallets.

I guess the big question is, how much better is the Core i5 really? I think I would rather have a socket AM3 board than a 1156 board, so that Core i5 had better be significantly better for me to go that direction.
