A New Rig I'm Ordering

Hello Hardware Canucks, I'm new around here and I'd like to ask your advice on a new rig that I'll be ordering soon. I'll be ordering it off of ncix.com already assembled as I have no experience putting together a PC. I'm sure I could do it, but I'd rather let the professional take care of it. Anyways, onto the PC...

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad Core Processor AM3 3.4GHZ 8MB Cache 140W $228.27
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PWM Pro AM2 S754 $30.26
MSI 790GX-G65 ATX AM3 790GX DDR3 2PCI-E16 CrossFire 2PCI-E1 2PCI HDMI $149.19
Edit: G.SKILL F3-10666CL9T-6GBNQ 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 $169
Edit: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 850MHZ 1GB 4.8GHZ GDDR5 $459.50
Edit: Antec Nine Hundred Two Mid Tower Gamer Case 902 ATX 9 $159.16
Seasonic SS-650HT 650W EPS12V 20/24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 80PLUS $83.96
Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive OEM $72.99

With everything included (case, OS, etc.) it comes to around $1600.

I have no preference as far as manufacturers go. For the vcard, I was thinking about an ATI HD5870 instead of the GTX 285. As for the rest, I've picked them through ncix's custom configurator and have no idea if these are the best options for the setup I have here.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: My budget is around $1600 so I'd like to get the best for that money.

Woah woah woah. Some things prices are nonos there. NOT WORTH IT.
Get THIS :
AMD Phenom II X4 955 & 4gb DDR3 ram for only $250 .
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus (instead of the AC Freezer 64, this is way better) - $30
Ditch that ram, that's an absurd price for that .
Get the HD5870 instead of the GTX 285 .
Case? Not the Nine Hundred. Nine hundred Two if you like the styling. Or even the Lancool Dragonlord k-62. Or the HAF 922 pricematched from DirectCanada. Or CM Storm Scout.
Your Power supply is fine, seasonic's make the best.
Likewise with your HDD choice, sounds good.

Thanks, Kayen.

I forgot to mention that the ram is doubled so 8 gigs for $300 (still a bit high though).

I sound like a broken record here, but.....

$112.99 AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Dual Core Processor Socket AM3 3.1GHZ 7MB Cache 80W Retail Box SKU: 39335
$132.99 Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P AMD790X ATX AM3 DDR3 2PCI-E SATA2 RAID Sound GLAN Motherboard SKU: 36174
$56.99 Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio SKU: 29812
$114.99 G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Ripjaws PC3-12800 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Core I5 1.5V Memory Kit SKU: 42745
$30.52 Samsung SH-S243D/BEBE 24X Black DVD Writer SATA OEM SKU: 45667
148.99 XFX Radeon HD 4870 750MHZ 1GB 3.6GHZ GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI HDCP Video Card SKU: 42237
$68.99 Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty SKU: 34286

Add your own PSU you have already picked out.

It goes for about $750 with taxes, no psu.

That 550 dual core unlocks to quad (sometimes, but it's luck of the draw) and then can overclock to around 3.8

I've had good success with that combo so far..... :thumb:

I think it's a good rig (pretty close to mine), but I would suggest going with either the HAF 922 or the CM Storm Scout at DirectCanada *and I would not bother price matching with NCIX on that unless your other stuff is coming from NCIX too. The guys at DirectCanada are good guys and deserve some love*.

Aside from that, unless you can get a Corsair 750w with a mail in rebate for under your current PSU price, I think it looks pretty decent.

Cheers!

if you're not going for the 125watt 965.. might as well save some money and get the 955..
also for a case i would prefer the lancool k62 i think it's called..

5870 Will be extremly short in antec case because of the side the HDD are mounted. That can be an issue. Last time I mesured it they were same length so I don't know if it will fit. I think it's a try and see if it will.

I may go for the 902 case.

Any thoughts for a LCD? I tried the Samsung 2233 120hz LCD, but I've heard stories of it not working properly @ 120hz with the 5870.

Kayen November 21, 2009 12:38 AM

Why the 902 ?
Because you may have issues mounting the HD5870...
Well unless you rip out one of the HDD bays , it might fit.
Also get the x4 965 125w version if you want the x4 965 , better OC headroom, temps, and power efficiency.

The ram you selected will not work. You need 2x 2Gb. Choose the model Perimeum selected ($114.99 G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Ripjaws PC3-12800 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Core I5 1.5V Memory Kit SKU: 42745)
Choose the Coolermaster Hyper212 over the AC7 Freezer.
