Default My First Build ($700 Budget)

I have never built a computer before and I am going to buying these parts from Australia. It is intended to be for gaming. What I have selected so far just falls with my budget of around $700. I have no preference in brands. Are there any improvements to what I have selected so far? Here they are (Prices from IT ESTATE):

CPU=AMD AM3 Phenom II x4 810 (Quad Core 2.6GHz/8MB/95W/45nm/can be used with all AM2 MBs & DDR2 Ram) $185

MOTHERBOARD= AMD AM2 S940 Gigabyte GA-MA770-US3 $91

RAM: DDR2 Ram 2GB (1x2048MB) PC6400 800MHz $56 (should i get 4GB of RAm?)

Graphics Card: PCI-e (nV) GTS 250 1024MB Sparkle $145

Hard Drive: 3.5" HDD SATA-300 1TB (1000GB) 32MB Samsung $97

Power supply: Power Supply 550w Huntkey Vista (with 140mm Super Silent Fan) $69

Total $643

I think all components fall within the specs of the motherboard but I may be wrong.

Also what would be a sound card you recommend?

From the computer I am currently using I already have a monitor (1280x1024), DVD Drive, Mouse and keyboard.

Thanks in advance

Yes. definitely 4GB. No more though.
Since you didn't give me the location where you are getting these parts, I'm going to go with a canadian site just for reference. Prices seem to be about the same. AM3 boards and DDR3 RAM has come down significantly in price; might as well go with it.
I would personally go with the following. Total cost is $593
Athlon IIx4 620
Canada Computers - CPU > Desktop AMD Processors : AMD Athlon II X4 620 (95W) Quad Core Socket AM3 , 2.6GHz, 2Mb Cache, 1800MHz HT, 45nm (ADX620WFGIBOX).
Asus AM3 motherboard
Canada Computers - Motherboards > Socket AM3 : Asus M4A77TD Pro Socket AM3 AMD + AMD 770 Chipset 5200Mt/s HyperTransport 3.0 PCI Express 2.0 x 16 Graphics Dual-Channel DDR3 1800 (O.C) 8+1 Phase Power ASTA 3Gb/s .
Mushkin DDR3
Canada Computers - Memory > Desktop Memory > DDR3 1333 PC3-10666+ : Mushkin HP3-10666 DDR3-1333MHz 4GB (2x2GB) HP Series Cas 7-7-7-20(1.7-1.8v) 240-Pin (996652).
WD Green 1TB
Canada Computers - Hard Drives > Desktop Drives > 3.5" SATA Drives : Western Digital Caviar Green (WD10EADS) 1000GB (1TB) SATA 3 Gb/s 32MB (OEM).
OCZ 500W
Canada Computers - Power Supplies > Mainstream Performance : OCZ StealthXStream 500W Power Supply - Active PFC, 120mm Fan (OCZ500SXS).
Radeon 4850 (same performance as gts250, lower price)
Canada Computers - Video Cards > PCI-Express Cards > Powered By ATI : PowerColor (AX4850 1GBD3-PH) ATI Radeon HD 4850 Chipset (625Mhz) 1GB GDDR3 (1900Mhz) Dual Display DVI/HDMI PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card.

I would keep enzo matrix part but stick with the pheom X4 810 ( 8mb cache is way better ) and drop the OCZ psuto something better, antec have some cheap which are really good. For pure value, Corsair seasonic PC power and cooling. They are pricy but immortal. This week at NCIX you can have a Corsair 650 for 79.99 whoch is a really good price. Also order all from NCIX and price match. you can get the price down a little more.

I personally would see if you can get a cheep 4870 or 4890 instead of the 250. Better performance and if you're running a 790gx,x or fx chipset on your motherboard you can run the full dragon platform from AMD and use overdrive and fusion software.

My System Specs

Default

$112.99 AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Dual Core Processor Socket AM3 3.1GHZ 7MB Cache 80W Retail Box
$132.99 Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P AMD790X ATX AM3 DDR3 2PCI-E SATA2 RAID Sound GLAN Motherboard

Get those components... same price but you end up with a better motherboard, and that 550 can unlock to quad core.

That's my $0.02 CAD

Thanks everyone, yeah I will probably go for the 4870, 4890 or 4850 instead of the GTS 250. DDR3 RAM seems the way to go along with AM3 motherboard. I was going to buy all these parts from Australian computer store ITESTATE ( http://www.itestate.com.au ) but after comparing prices “Canada Computers” seems to have better range/ prices I will probably buy from there.

Thanks again
