My System Specs

Default Time For Some 'Newer' Tech

I get to choose a few PC upgrades for system in my sig as a xmas gift. Only stipulation was it had to be within a reasonable budget of around $600 max. I pretty much have everything I need as far as peripherals go so I figured I'd do a moderate upgrade in processor power. After much internets browsing I figure the Core i5 is the best value for the money atm since it won't break the gift-giver's wallet. In order to do that I'll also upgrade mobo and move to DDR3 memory. All for about $530 CDN.

Thoughts?

CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz
Mobo: ASUS P7P55D EVO LGA 1156
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 DDR3 1600 Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ (possibly 4 x 2GB)

I'll reuse everything else I already have until solid state drives drop in price. I will also continue to use my Zalman CNPS cpu fan with the appropriate mounting bracket as I do plan to overclock the i5.

For the CPU it's a great move, also great mobo but also concider the UP4P from gigabytes. For the memory I would recommend the trident over the ripjaws. The internet seems to be on my side that they die fast and it's look to be true. 3 week ago I order for a friend...DOA, I order for me, DOA to so I go with trident and for now everything is perfect great OC and 1600Ghz abble to boot over 2000Ghz. Take a look at it;)

Solid picks! I built my friend's new computer using the same CPU with ASUS P7P55D Pro and G.SKILL Trident DDR3-1600 4GB, easily overclocked to 4.0 GHz.

I considered the Gigabyte mobo since it was being offered in a bundle deal thru NCIX. But reviews led me to the ASUS EVO and I have predominantly relied on ASUS mobo's for the last many years. The RAM I've selected is not the Ripjaws series.

Cool. Should I bump the memory to 1600 since the set I've chosen is 1333 which is the clockspeed of the i5?

If you have no plan to OC 1600 wont give you a real boost so don't really. But if you plan to, so yeah go for it!
