This is my first ever build ever - I have the assistance of a friend if I get stuck but I want to give it a shot myself first.

That is definitely a powerful computer, though it will put a dent in the bank account.

I am not familiar with the case, so I will let someone else guide you on that.

The CPU is excellent, but priced accordingly. If you can overclock then you can save money and go with the i7 920. Also you could consider switching to the i7 860 and P55 platform.

The power supply is something many people will likely tell you to switch. It may be fine, but it is always a safe bet to go with Corsair or Seasonic.

Do you really want to spend $500+ on a DirectX 10 card? The GTX 295 is on the verge of becoming obsolete. Whether that happens with the 5970/5870x2 or with what ever Fermi ends up becoming... It looks to me like you are looking for bleeding edge, but I just wouldn't get a GTX 295 right now. I would compromise on the video card right now, and wait it out for the next generation.

Looking at the $/MB ratio on that VelociRaptor, I would pass and jump straight to an SSD (speed, speed, speed). If you are running Windows 7, "libraries" will make it easy to put personal files on a second more spacious and much cheaper drive. For example, I might play around with the idea of a 30 or 60 GB SSD (that supports TRIM, like OCZ's Vertex or Agility) that would run the OS, key programs and a game or two, and then get a 500 GB secondary drive for everything else. Yes, the ratio gets even worse, but the performance can't be touched. This is something I really wish I did, anyway.

For example:
Newegg.com - OCZ Agility Series OCZSSD2-1AGT60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks paired with
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

For the sake of argument.

Agreed, with both Ritz and Bond007. i5 and i7 860 isn't that great of a performance drop off for $92384903802394 less.
And with the speeds of the Caviar Black Drives, they make velociraptor pricing look silly, and with SSD's looking to be the future i would do that route as well.
And GTX295 is NOT worth it at this point.

I'd going for the HX850W over the Toughpower.
HX850W:
Modular
80 Plus Silver (More efficient)
6x 6+2pin PCI-E
Single Rail
$199.99 @ newegg ($169.99 after MIR)

Toughpower:
Modular
80 Plus (Less efficient)
2 x 6-Pin, 2 x 8-Pin
Multiple Rails
$209 @ newegg

You could also go with the HX750 as it like it's big brother, but comes with a combo deal with the EVGA E758-TR plus has an additional discount on it.

Looks like a nice build.
Definately consiider the i7 920 though...
Can save a couple hundred $$$ and it's just as good (easy to OC to 950 performance and beyond).
