Default Here's a build question....

Hi, just curious after reading some posts, What is the best combo of parts...

An i7 build with a 4870 card or an i5 build with a 5850... both look like they will run about the same price.

I5 / 5850... It;s way better balanced. Getting a I7 with 4870 is like...having a ******* ugly girls with the biggest boobs you have ever see.

Ask for more.

Not really a good example, cuz having the biggest boobs would mean, she'd be ugly(nothing going for her). I would tend to ask the purpose of the computer before giving out an answer. If gaming is involved, the 5850 will definitively give better performance tho.

The purpose would be 80% video/animation work, 10% gaming, 10% surfing. As long as I could play itunes, do my work in Flash Professional, keep my mail open, and surf a bit on a break.. that would be ideal. And then play games like Bioshock on the weekends. :)

Do you know what does the video/animation program uses for it's heavy crunching? If it's CPU, and the program can take advantage of hyperthreading, i7 could have a significant advantage over i5. But if it uses the video card, the 5850 will be king (assuming you can even find one for sale at this time). Also, make sure you include enough RAM regardless.

Also make sure you have enough RAM, I run out fairly often if I'm working on massive projects and have internet browsers and other applications open.
