Default Developer Build

Hi folks,

I'm new here so hopegully I don't break the rules. I work as a contractor so I buy my own PC for work. At my current job I usually have all the following running at once:
  • SQL Server (Require SQL server to run on my own machine)
  • SQL Management Studio
  • .Net Development in Visual Studio 2008 (WPF, Silverlight, RIA, Windows Services, WCF, etc...)
  • Visual Studio 6 (VB6)
  • Crystal Reports 7
  • Crystal Reports 2008
  • Outlook/Word/MSN
  • Quake3 (we play for a bit every afternoon)
My main problem with my current machine is that it's feeling sluggish and builds in VS 2008 are taking FOREVER.

I have convinced myself that an SSD hard drive is a necessity. I am going to leave it out of the build for now as I know their expensive and I will figure that out once I have this all sorted out. For the rest of the system I am looking to spend around $1000 before taxes/shipping/etc...

I live in the Vancouver area so I could pick up from NCIX to avoid shipping but I really really hate those guys and their in store service is just brutal. If I buy from NewEgg i don't pay PST which is a 7% savings. Here's what I priced out so far, let me know what you think!

You could always improve your HDD performance with a raid 10 with 3 more of those 640 gig drives. NCIX has a reasonably priced raid card from adaptec that I'm currently using and very pleased with
Adaptec AAR-1430SA Serial ATA HostRAID Controller NCIX.com - Buy Adaptec 1430SA 4 Port SATA II RAID 0/1/10/JBOD Low Profile Controller Card PCI-E4 RoHS - 2240900-R In Canada.

Get the pci-e version if you are intrested in something like this. The 640's in raid0 are unreal... the raid 10 just gives you the mirror as well as the raid0. Used to be called raid 0+1. Certainly a cheaper option than the SSD's and great performance over single drive solutions. I'm sure you'd be happy... I know I would.

Everything you've picked looks fine to me.
